    Psalm books

    More than 375 Psalm books were published at this time
  • Boston Music Schools

    In the 18th century, the pilgrims and puritans were coming to America and bringing their little musical knowledge with them. The puritans themselves, both theologically and culturally, were rather regressive, and were also dealing with survival and living in the middle of nowhere. The hymn music in their churches got so bad, the priests encouraged music schools in Boston.
  • Lowell Mason and the Boston Academy

    Lowell Mason formed the Boston Academy of music in order to teach music theory as well as singing. he published his Manuel of Instruction in 1834. 1838 was the first inclusion of music in curriculum. Lowell mason was recognized as the first supervisor of elementary music.

    Immigration into the United States

    The United States was effectively changing its demographic. White, Anglo Saxon, Protestants were still the majority, but were no longer the only ones on the scene. The musical scene was changing as well because of this

    Creation of MENC/NAfME

    In 1907, the Music Supervisor's National Conference was founded. It was changed to Music Educators National Conference in 1934. It then changed to National Association for Music Education (NAfME)
  • Child's Bill of Rights

    MENC centered their philosophical values around the student
  • Nationality Act of 1952

    This act made immigration a preference, as in many immigrant groups were favored more for citizenship than others
  • Young Composer's Project

    The young composers project provided an outlet for rising composers to use their music, as it placed young composers into the school systems. They were paid $5K annually. This provided music for the school systems
  • Yale Seminar

    The Yale Seminar had the purpose of identifying the problems of the American music education system. It was federally funded. The conclusions that they found were negative. The Yale Seminar concluded that the goal in curriculum for K-12 should be musicality
  • Tanglewood Symposium

    The Tanglewood Symposium further established unified philosophy in music education. It created an emphasis on special education music and youth music.
  • Education Amendments Act of 1972

    The passage of this act turned multicultural education into a legal obligation.
  • National Music Standards

    1994 was a big step for music education as national standards were created. There was talk before hand about educational reform. The standards were introduced by MENC. Some states adopted them immediately, and some created their own standards.
