  • Seward's Folly

    Seward's Folly (other wise known as the Alaskan purchase) was a treaty between Russia and the United States, stating that America agreed to by Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million dollars (2 cents an acre). This treaty was signed and negotiated by the Russian Minister to the United States, Edouard de Stoeckl and by the U.S. Secretary of State, William Seward. Critics opposed to the purchase gave it the name "Seward's Folly". The motivation for buying Alaska was for the natural resources.
  • Annexation of Hawaii

    President Dole, who was an astonishing American businessman, had the idea of having the American Congress make Hawaii a territory of the U.S. in order to secure our commercial advantages which helped with the expansion of the American trade in the Far East. Once Hawaii was annexed, which was frowned upon by many, the U.S. was able to establish a naval base there, and also was able to avoid paying taxes on crops such as sugar.
  • The Spanish American War

    (Problems between Spain and the U.S. had been a brew for a while now) Cuba,1898, in the Havana Harbor the explosion of the USS Maine was the last straw which lead to the United States stepping in on the Cuban War of Independence. The war was short lived, lasting from April of 1898 to August of 1898, due to the Treaty of Paris.
  • The Treaty of Paris

    The Treaty of Paris was signed on December 10, 1898, ending the Spanish American War. This treaty stated that Cuba was free of Spain's rule, Guam and Puerto Rico was ceded to the United States, and the Philippines was ceded to the United States for $20 million. On April 11, 1899, when the documents of ratification were exchanged, the treaty came into effect.
  • Open Door Notes

    Written by John Hay in 1899-1900, the Open Door notes aimed to secure an international agreement to the U.S. , promoting an equal chance of international trade and commerce in China.
  • Boxer Rebellion

    The Boxer Rebellion was a supported peasant uprising, made up of anti-foreign, anti-Christian, and anti-colonial men, in 1900 which aimed to remove all foreigners out of China
  • Construction of the Panama Canal

    Construction of the canal began in 1903 and was finished in 1914. The canal was created to make a quick and cheaper way to ship goods between the Atlantic to the Pacific coasts.
  • Roosevelt Corollary

    The Roosevelt Corollary was an addition to the Monroe Doctrine by, then President, ''Teddy'' Roosevelt. It stated that the U.S. might intervene in the affairs of an American republic that has been threatened with the seizure or intervention of a European country.
  • Moral "missionary" Diplomacy

    President Wilson created Moral Diplomacy in his 1912 election, which stated that the United States would support countries whose moral beliefs were analogous to that of the nation.
  • Dollar Diplomacy introduced

    President Taft created this diplomacy in 1913, to ensure the financial stability of a region while protecting and extending U.S. commercial and financial interests.
