    Annexation of Hawaii
    American interference in Hawaii started in the 1820s with New England missionaries attempting to spread their faith. soon, the focus of Americans in Hawaii turned towards sugar production, which was very profitable. After the implementation of a tariff against foreign goods, Hawaii entered a depression. the white sugar growers started an uprising in 1893 to become apart of the U.S. and end the depression. After the queen was overthrown and the U.S. won its war with Spain, Hawaii was annexed.

    Following the sinking of the Maine, a motion was put forth to congress to decide if the U.S. would intervene in the Cuban Revolution on behalf of the rebels. Fighting begun in the Philippines and in Cuba. After the Spanish Navy was destroyed, Spain asked for terms of peace.

    Starting with John Hay's Open Door Note, America made clear its intent to partake in the Chinese economy. This note was not rejected by any of the 8 countries it addressed, and America's role in China was now cemented.

    Filipinos saw this conflict as a continuation of their struggle for independence, while the U.S. saw it as an insurrection. at least 200,000 Filipino civilians were killed, mostly from famine and disease. the U.S. won the war in 1902, but small conflict continued for the next decade. many atrocities were committed on both sides.

    Roosevelt orchestrated an uprising in Panama to gain independence from Colombia. After the revolution was complete, he completed a treaty with the new Panama government to have complete sovereignty over the Canal Zone.

    A note of mutual agreement pledging mutual respect for each nation's Pacific possessions. resulted in a weakened american influence over further Japanese control over China.
  • Lodge Corollary

    The resolution stated that non-European powers would be excluded from owning land in the western hemisphere. President Taft opposed the Corollary and Japan and Latin American countries were angered.
