    Imperialism, as it is defined by the Dictionary of Human Geography, is an unequal human and territorial relationship, usually in the form of an empire, based on ideas of superiority and practices of dominance, and involving the extension of authority and control of one state or people over another.
  • Yellow Journalism.

     Yellow Journalism.
    Yellow journalism, is a type of journalism that presents little or no legitimate well-researched news and instead uses eye-catching headlines to sell more newspapers. Techniques may include exaggerations of news events, scandal-mongering, or sensationalism.
  • The Progressive Era.

    The Progressive Era.
    The Progressive Era was a period of social activism and political reform in the United States, that flourished from the 1890s to the 1920s. One main goal of the Progressive movement was purification of government through direct democracy. Progressives also sought regulation of monopolistic trust corporations through the antitrust laws, which were seen as a means to promote fair competition for the benefit of the consumers.
  • The Muckrakers.

    The Muckrakers.
    Muckraking involved investigating journalism where reporters would immerse themselves in the industry or activity they were trying to expose. Through that, they would report on abuses to gauge public uproar and initiate change.
    Muckraking articles usually appeared in magazines such as McClure Magazine, Cosmopolitan, and Munsey's.
  • The Russian Revolution.

    1917 Czar Nicholas II is overthrown.
    1918 - 1920 there is civil war in Russia between the “Reds” and “Whites.”
    “Reds” are Bolsheviks. ( support communism .)
    The U.S., Britain, France, and Japan backed the “Whites.”
    “Reds” win and put in a Communist in government.
  • The Red Scare.

    The Red Scare is a period of intense fear of Communism and other extreme ideas.
    Americans feared Communism spreading into the United States.
    Spread throughout the Unites States in 1919 and 1920.
  • Support for Socialism in the U.S.

    Industrialization created a big gap between the rich and poor.
    Some Americans supported the Russian Revolution and were inspired to have Communism in the U.S.
    Some labor unions wanted to unite all the workers and supported Socialism.
    Labor strikes started and many Americans believed Communists were behind them.
    Anarchists supported overthrowing the government and no protection of private wealth.

    The Great Depression was a severe worldwide economic depression in the decade preceding World War II. The timing of the Great Depression varied across nations, but in most countries it started in 1930 and lasted until the late 1930s or middle 1940s. It was the longest, deepest, and most widespread depression of the 20th century
  • Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA)

    The new name given by the Roosevelt Administration to the Emergency Relief Administration (ERA).
    President Herbert Hoover had created in 1932.
    FERA was established as a result of the Federal Emergency Relief Act and was replaced in 1935 by the Works Progress Administration (WPA).
  • The New Deal.

    The New Deal.
    The New Deal was a series of domestic programs enacted in the United States between 1933 and 1936, and a few that came later. They included both laws passed by Congress as well as presidential executive orders during the first term of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The programs were in response to the Great Depression, and focused on what historians call the "3 Rs": Relief, Recovery, and Reform.
  • Public Works Administration (PWA)

    part of the New Deal of 1933, was a large-scale public works construction agency in the United States headed by Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Ickes.
    It was created by the National Industrial Recovery Act in June 1933 in response to the Great Depression.
    Built dams, bridges, hospitals, and schools.
  • Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)

    Was a public relief program that operated from 1933-1942.
    The American public made the CCC the most popular of all the New Deal programs.
    The CCC operated separate programs for veterans and Native Americans.
    Also known as ‘Roosevelt’s Tree Army’.
  • Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA)

    Reduced agricultural production.
    ITs purpose was to reduce crop surplus and eventually raise the tax on crops.
  • National Recovery Administration (NRA)

    Was the primary new deal agency established by president Franklin D. Roosevelt .
    Allowed industries to get together and write “codes of fair competition.”
    Reduced unemployment.
  • World War II.

    World War  II.
    World War II was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945, though global related conflicts begun earlier. It involved the vast majority of the world's nations—including all of the great powers—eventually forming two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis.
