  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763

    The colonists were not allowed settle anywhere west of the Appalachian Mountains. The British did this because they wanted to let the Indians keep their land in the Ohio valley This angered colonists and the colonists and many of them settled west of the mountains anyway.

    Sugar act

    It put duties on foreign sugar and banned importation of foreign rum. The British did this to make money to raise money for the crown which angered many colonists. This led to them protesting.

    It prohibited the colonists from printing money and created fines and other forms of punishment for people who disobeyed. Colonists were extremely upset because it helped out British merchants and the crown.

    The act required the colonists to provide barracks and supplies for the British troops because of the seven years war. The colonists were angry because they had to provide housing or spend their money on the British army and many colonists disobeyed the act.

    The act taxed many everyday items mostly paper products and required that they must be stamped to show that you paid the tax. The colonists became very upset and money of them protested and boycotted.

    The act made it clear that the parliament has the same amount of control in the colonies as it does in Great Britain because many people thought the stamp act was stupid and didn't follow its rules. The British were trying to fully gain control of the colonists.

    The act taxed goods being imported to the American colonies and it was created to help pay for governing the American colonies. The colonies did not like this at all and they boycotted until it was repealed.

    There was a riot on the street and the colonists were yelling at the British soldiers. The British soldiers ended up fire and killing 5 people.

    The first Military fight between the colonists and the British. The British were going to take the colonists guns so the colonists protected them. The colonists new that there were going to have a war.

    Both the colonists and the British wanted bunkerhill but when the colonists got there it they picked the wrong hill. Because of that they fought on breeds hill and the british won and conquered the hill but the colonists killed lots of british troops. This raised hope for the colonists and gave them confidence.

    After crossing Delaware river the Americans defeated a group of Hessian mercenaries at Trenton. This made the Americans feel stronger and they gained lots of supplies giving them an advantage for the war.

    The battle of Saratoga was an American victory and a turning point in the war because it made the Americans feel strong and they got french allies.

    It was a winter encampment that had very scarse resources and cold weather, Until Baron Freindrich von stuiben came and trained soldiers which gave them confindence and helped advance the colonists in the war.

    The battle of Yorktown was the last major battle in the war. The colonists won with the help of the french by fully surrounding the British. The British later signed the Treaty of Paris.

    Abolitionism was the movement to end slavery and helped get rid of slavery in the US entirely. This separated the nation because the southern states wanted slavery so they didn't like the movement against it.

    This was the treaty signed at the end of the war between the colonists and the British. This gave the colonists freedom because they won the war.

    The US expanded and grew a lot over this period of time and gained states such as such as California, Louisiana, Utah, Texas and many more.Westward Expansion brought the nation together because it made them make laws and changes to keep the power in the US balanced.

    In the Us there was a large population of enslaved people. This brought up the problem whether the US should count them as people for the population. The southern states thought they should be counted because they wanted to have more votes in the government. The Northern states thought they shouldn't count because the southern states don't treat them like people. The court decided to count them as 3/5 of a person. This brought the nation together because they overcame a big problem.

    Because the big states wanted a more of a say for how many people they had and the small states wanted an equal say the US government decided to make two different groups. The house of representatives which gave the states two representatives for every 30,000 people and the senate which gave all states two representatives. This was very important in US history because it was one of the first big compromises they made and we still have them today.

    George Washington put a tax on whiskey to make money back from the war. This angered many wheat farmers and they started a rebellion. George Washington sent troops to silence the rebellion. There was no fight and it showed that he is president.

    The 10th amendment states that the laws not addressed by the federal Government is up to the states to decide for themselves. This shows that the US is separated because each state can have different laws from each other.

    France started to attack US ships so president Adams sent three representatives to talk to France and the king wanted a bribe. This showed that France did not respect them so they didn't do anything.

    Alien and Sedition Acts

    Americans were worried that French immigrants would side with the French so they created an act that gives them the right to imprison and deport anyone who wasn't a US citizen. It also stated that people were not allowed to speak badly about the king.

    Virginia and Kentucky Revolutions

    Democratic Republicans that the Alien and Sedition acts were unconstitutional and an abuse of power so they tried to create a law called the Kentucky revolution. Even though it was denied they later got rid of the laws so it shows the states can help change laws.

    This act was created because of the tension between the US and Britain and France. The act put embargos on all ships and stated they were not allowed to trade with Europe. This made the colonists very angry because it was a big source of income for some of them.

    The underground railroad provided safe passageways for enslaved Americans to travel to the North to freedom. The underground railroad escorted over 300 slaves to freedom, never losing a single passenger. Although the Underground Railroad was very good, it brought the nation away from each other because the south was losing lots of slaves.

    This war was between the US and the United Kingdom and they had tensions with each other for a while and it was a big topic whether they should fight or not. In the end the US won and it was a big victory.

    Congress created a central bank to manage the economy and there was a big debate to see if they were allowed to. Some people thought they can because of implied powers and others thought they cant because of expressed powers. In the end they made the bank.

    With all the states joining the US they needed to make sure they maintained the balance of power so when Missouri joined the US as a slave state they had Maine join as a free state. Then during the Louisiana Purchase because of all the states joining they created a line and all states below it would vote on slavery and all states above it would be free states. The Government made a compromise to keep every happy and maintain the balance of power.

    Harriet Tubman was an escaped slave who became an abolitionist in America. She played a big role in the underground railroad and traveled back into slave states to rescue around 70 enslaved Americans.

    This act was created because of the number of Latin-American countries that gained independence from Spain and the US didn't want European powers to take them over. In the act they ended up stating that neither of them should go on the others side. This showed that the US is powerful.

    California wanted to become a free state but because it would upset the balance of power, the US created the fugitive slave act to keep both sides happy. This shows that the US has two obvious sides which both have to be kept happy which is not good for a Nation.

    This law was part of the compromise of 1850. It stated that all slaves that went to the north were required to be returned to their owner. This brought the nation together because this made the south happy even though California became a free state.

    The Secession was when the southern states had enough of the the rules about slavery and they seceded from the Union and formed their own nation. This tore the Nation apart because the southern states completely left.

    This proclamation stated that all slaves shall be free and it was a result of the civil war. The Emancipation Proclamation showed sectionalism because the south didn't want to get rid of slavery.
