    The South Secedes from the United States
    When the south seceded from the United States Abraham Lincoln was furious. He viewed this action illegal and then raised an army of 75 000 which he believed would be enough to put down the rebellion. More lives were killed than anyone could ever imagine.
  • The South Now Formed Their Own Government

    The South Now Formed Their Own Government
    The seven southern states that seceded held a convention in Montgomery, Alabama and created what is known as the Confederate Constitution. This new constitution was similar to the original constitution but greater stressed the autonomy of each state. Jefferson Davis was appointed the president of the Confederacy.

    When the seceded the Union still held southern forts and the south demanded for them back. When the Union refused to hand over the forts, the south took them by force.

    When Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated he explained how he did not want to try to abolish slavery in states in which it already exists but seceding is un-exceptable. Abraham Lincoln wanted to try to solve the crisis without any means of warfare.

    The Attack on Fort Sumter
    Abraham Lincoln sent supplies to Fort Sumter because he knew that the south were going to attack. Despite their preperatios, the fort was surrendered to South Carolina.

    Four More States Decided to Join the Confederacy
    During this time four more states joined the confederacy making the south even stronger.

    The State of West Virginia is Created
    Parts of Virginia did not want to join the confederacy so that is when the western part of Virginia split off to form West Virginia. West Virginia joined the Union soon after.

    The general public pushed Winfield Scott, who was the General-in-Chief at the time to attack the south before they could train their troops. The union invaded Manassas Junction, Virginia but the south had reinforcements which sllowed the south to hold their town.

    The Union tried to blockade the Southern ships with their imporved navy and they succeded. Later the south made much smaller and quicker boats to bypass the larger Union ships.

    President Abraham Lincoln issued a war order allowed any members of the Union to ingage in aggressive acts against the confederacy by any means necessary.

    The Battle of Shiloh
    The confederate troops attacked the union at Shiloh and the union was almost defeated but reinforcements came which allowed the union to defeat the confederates. The confederate troops retreated but the union was too exhausted to follow them.

    The confederate army attacked the union at seven pines; the union was close to defeat was reinforcement arrived and helped the union win the battle of seven pines. The confederate commander Joseph E. Johnston was wounded so Robert E. Lee took over commanding the confederate army.

    The Battle of Fredericksburg
    Due to General McClellan's slow movements, he was replaced with Ambrose E. Burnside as decided by Abraham Lincoln. Ambrose Burnside was later replaced with Joseph Hooker after A. Burnside had countless defeats.

    There was much difficulty recruiting new soldiers; so there was a conscription act passed making any man between the age of 20 and 45 to be called for military service at anytime. Someone could get out of joining the war if they were to pay a fee or if they could find someone to be a substitute.

    The Battle of Chancellorville
    General Hooker crosses the Rappahannock river so that they could attack General Lee's troops, but Lee divided his army and starting attacking the union from three different locations. The union was forced to retreat.

    Union General Grant won many battles near the Vicksburg, Mississippe area but knew that gaining control of the Mississippi River wss essential to make travel much easier. After six weeks of attacking Confederate General John Pemberton at Port Hudson, Louisiana, the union finally gained control of the Mississippi River.

    The Battle of Cold Harbor
    The union attacked the confederates at Cold Harbor and lost over 7 000 men in only twenty minutes. Lee's troops suffered less casualties from the battle.
  • Abraham Lincoln Is Re-Elected

    Abraham Lincoln Is Re-Elected
    The Republican party nominated Abraham Lincoln once again and later won the election by a substantial portion. Sherman's victory in Atlanta significantly helped Lincoln gain popularity which allowed him to win the election.
  • The Fall of the Confederacy

    The Fall of the Confederacy
    Due to the union blockading the southern supplies, the confederate soldiers started to starve and the south was contemplating allowing slaves to fight in the war but the idea was never passed.
  • The South Officially Surrendered

    The South Officially Surrendered
    The majority of the confederate troops were defeated and the south officially lost the Civil War of the United States. Jefferson Davis was captured in Georgia on May 10th.
