Lincoln signed the final emancitpation proclamation. This freed all slaves in the north. Lincoln hoped that ex-slaves would enlist in the military. This caused the war to be about the abolition of slavery.

The Union army had a big lost under Gen. Hooker. The south had much less people in their army, but still defeated the north. The north had 17,000 people killed.

In this battle the tide of the war turns. The south is defeated in Gettysburg. The south had a tougher time after this battle.

A Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi surrenders to Gen. Grant. The Union had a six week seige on the fort. The Confederacy was split in half with the Union having control of the Mississippi.

Gen Bragg Army defeats Gen. Rosecrans Union Army. This leaves the Union Army trapped in Tennessee. They were then under a seige by the Confederacy.

Lincoln gives a speech about the battle field where the battle took place. It was only two minutes. Despite the short time it has become very famous.

The rebel siege ends when Gen. Grant comes with his men. During the battle many men ran with no orders to attack. They were trying to avenge the defeat they had earlier.

Grant starts his march of 120,000 soldiers to Richmond. Lee has 64,000 men waiting at North Virginia. Sherman also started a march to Tennessee.

Siege
The Union misses an opportunity to cut off railroads at Petersburg. This is when the Union trapped the Confederate soldiers for nine months. This would be a big part of the war later. -
Sherman and his men capture Atlanta. He says the Alanta is ours, and fairly won. This also helped Lincoln with the election.

Lincoln is re-elected and defeats George McCllelan. He had most of the electoral votes in the country. If he had not been elected the war may have not continued.

Sherman's March
Sherman and his men left Atlanta and marched south. They destroyed anything that the saw on the way. They had no goal other than to destroy everything. -
The US Congress approves the 13th amendment. This amendment was made to abolish slavery. It was then sent to the states to be ratified.

Lee Surrenders
After the nine month siege the Confederate soldiers and Gen. Lee surrendered. This marked the end of the War. The Union won and the Confederacy was forced to join the Union. -
Ways it Changed America
The Civil War changed USA forever after it was finished. The war caused slavery to be abolished. The war also caused advancements in medicine.
