North Vietnam went under the communist rule of Ho Chi Minh. South Vietnam became closely linked with the United States without a communist ruler. In fact, they were tied to closly to the United States South Vietnam could not srvive on their own if the United States ever stopped supporting it.This became a big part of Amreican government.

    Slide #24: Gulf of Tonkin Incident/Resolution (Aug '64)Due to the separtation of countries Vietnam gets into a civil war, North VS South. The country is divided at the 17th parell.
    The main topic of war is communisum. This affects the United States because they promised to host elections to unify the land in two years, however that election never happened due to how powerful the North leader became.

    Slide #24: Gulf of Tonkin Incident/Resolution (Aug '64)A U.S. Navy Destroyer was out protrolling the Gulf of Tonkin because it was supporting a South Vietnemese attack. The North detected the attack and sent out gun boats to shoot at the destroyer. The destroyer was hit but got out safely.

    Slide #24: Gulf of Tonkin Incident/Resolution (Aug '64)Two nights after the first attack the U.S. Destroyer comes back to the Gulf of Tonkin with another ship. While out they both though they detected North Vietnamese torpedos in the water after them, but it ended up being a "phantom attack" (a missreading). These two events were just what President Johnson was looking for to get more involved.

    Slide #24: Gulf of Incident/Resolution (Aug '64)Presdient Johnson always knew the United States military was going to need to help more, he just needed the right event to happen so he could convince congress that it truely was necessary, He used the Gulf of Tonkin events to do this. However he left out that they were not damnaging or exactly a big enough deal, but he got escalation of U.S. forces. This lead to commitment being intensifed.

    Tet Offensive-1968Slide #26: The Tet Offensive happened in 1968. They were the American and South Vietnamese enemys. Instead of staying with their normal stragies of gorilla warfare, they attacked cities out in the open. This made it clear that America was wrong in thinking that they were almost done fighting, and that it was actually going to be a much longer war than expected before the Tet Offensive.

    Slide #26: Tet Offensive-1968Due to the fact that the Tet Offensive attack was so different to what American troops and South Vietnamese soilerds were use to the Tet Offensive captured just about all of South Vietnam in a matter of weeks. Even the U.S. embassy, which was the ultimate symbol of American power, was breifly taken over.
    U.S. forces couterattacked and gradually recaptured all the areas however.

    SourceRichard Nixon took office with promises to achieve "peace with honor". Nixon hoped to negotiate a settlement that would allow the half million U.S. troops in Vietnam to be withdrawn, while still allowing South Vietnam to survive. This would please the people but be harder than expected.

    SourceThe American public learned about the massacure that took place in a town called Mai Lai. What upset so many American's was that it wasn't just opposing soilders that got affected, this massacure killed 100s of Vietnamese civilians in the town. Even more frustrating to the public, is that this massacure happened a year before on March 16, 1968.

    Nixon Orders a New Bombing Campaing Against the North Called Operation Linebacker II.
    SourceOperation Linebacker II lasts 12 days, which included a 3 day bombing period by up to 120 B-52s. During this operation the U.S. aricraft dropped more than 20,000 tons of bombs to North Vietnamese. The afternath resulted in 26 U.S. planes lost, and 93 airmen killed, captured, or missing. North Vietnam did admit to having between 1,300 and 1,600 of their people dead however.

    SourceThe Paris Peace Accords are signed to provide a cease-fire. They were intended to establish peace in Vietname and end the Vietnam war. It did end U.S. military envolvment, troops were taken out in March. The Paris Peace Accords temporaily stopped the fighting between North and South Vietnam, overall however they had little practical effect on the conflict.

This affects America due to the fact that after years of fighting, going further in debt, and conflicts between the government and the people, it made no change to South Vietnam. This fact caused much frustration throughout America.
