General Taylor's army marched into the territory that BOTH Mexico and the US claimed as their own.

Polk asked US congress to declare on Mexico. The US sent 500,000 volunteers to fight and gave $10 million dollars to war efforts.

General Taylor's army invaded the city and defeated a Mexican general. It was part of his plan to cut off Northern Mexico. The success of General Taylor spread througout the US and increased the number of people who wanted to join the troops.

In the Battle of Mexico City or otherwise known as the Battle or Chapultepec, Mexico held off the Americans for 14 hours before becoming unable to get help and surrendering. This battle happened from Septemember 12-13 1847.

In January of 1848, the US and Mexico made a peace agreement giving the US California, New Mexico, and the border they wanted. The US had to pay $15 million dollars to Mexico for this. Negotiators signed the treaty on Febuary 2nd and rushed it to Washington DC.
