First Black slaves arrive in America
In 1609 the first black slaves were brought to america. This event was very influentual because it lead to Americans using black people as slaves for many generations, and leading to racism in America. I selected this event because it was impacted African-American philosophy for many years in the future. -
fugitive slave law is enacted
In 1793, a law was passed which enable slave owners to capture their slaves who escaped. This impacted many slaves who escaped and lost their freedom again. i choose this because it was a turning point in slaves rights. -
congress bans the importation of slaves from Africa
This lead to slavery still going on in America, but no more slaves could imported. This impacted the slave trade to slave owners who bought and sold slaves. -
14 ammendment ratified
The 14h amendment to the constitution gave all races equal protection to laws and voting. This amendment was very influentual because it was a step to equality for all races, this was especially influentual because it was in the 19th century when racism was still prevalent. -
emancipation proclamation
This may be the most influentual event on m timeline. This law abolished slavery in America. it was passed during the Civil War. Although people were still racist towards blacks, they now saw them as equal people, including in the eyes of the law. -
KKK is formed
The Klu Klux Klan is a white supremicest organization in the US. They were known for their extreme racism, and violence to non-whites in America. Unfortunaltey ,many members were government officials and this formation showed the sill existing racism and bias of the american people and government. -
15th Ammendment is ratified
The 15th Amendment made all people of all color born in the US a ciizen. This act was imporant because it let blacks be closer to equality to the whites. i choose this event because it gave many blacks voting rights so it was influentual because they could now vote against other racist laws in america. -
Plessy v Fergeson
Plessy v Fergeson gave the ruling towards blacks "separate but equal". Although this was written into law it was not commonly practiced. Blacks still had separate establishments but they were not equal. Especially in the South. This ruling was influenual because it showed the push for equaliy and the constant denial and misrepresentation of the US government. -
NAACP is formed
NAACP is an organization that helps the freedoms of Black Americans. A big influence of the NAACP was the legal help of their lawyers towards Black Americans who couldn't afford or find a lawyer. the NAACP helped win many legal battles which slowley helped shift the law into equality. this NAACP is still important in today's societ with things like Affirmative Action. -
African Americans integrated intp armed forces
This bill alowed African Americans to join the millitary. It truely let blacks be americans when they could fight for their country. it was important because it also recognized the black soliders in the millitary. -
Brown V Board of Education
When the verdict of Brown v Board passed, allowing integrated schools, it helped black children feel more together, regardless of race. it took the race out of schools which led to equality. -
Emmett Till is murdered
The death of Emmett Till sparked rage across america. it helped reveal the true racism occuring in the south. although blacks were equal de facto they were treated badly. many people in the north did not realize this was happening. -
Rosa Parks aressted
When Rosa Parks was arrested, america started to reform their bus laws for african americans. it let to the montgomery bus boycott. i choose this event because it affected lawmakers' decisions. -
MLK i have a dream speech
MLK's i have a dream speech sparked peacful protests in Washington DC. It gave a way for black's to peacfully unite and protest together. Martin Luther King Jr. talked about his dreams of blacks and whites being together, regardless of race. this idea led to changes in law, now we are more towards equality as a country. -
Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated
When James Earl Ray killed MLK, the nation was in outrage, and it led to protests and riots in Washington DC. Many people believed that his death was a conspiricy, while many believed that it was an act against African Americans. MLK is still honored today . -
First Black President
Barrak Obama was inagurated on Jan 20, 2009. Many black americans who had lived during times of racism during the 1960s were very happy for this income because it showed that anyone can run the country regardless of race or gender. -
Summary
My timeline highlights the movement of african american equality in america, and in the world. it shows the struggles that blacks went through, racism. my timeline also shows the proud moments that blacks have to celebrate their equality today
