    The middle passage
    The middle passage was the time span of 1500-1750 where 10-12 million african americans were transported to America. The slaves in this process were mistreated and in brutal conditions, they were auctioned off when they arrived in America. 15% died on the ships coming to America and many died during the seasoning process, even before they were sold to plantations.

    this is the year that records suggest that black servants became black slaves. It showwed an indication in the court records that made slaves serve for life insteda of for a period of time. However before this time period black servant were ot treated as well as indentured servants either. But they were still treated more fairly than black slaves were.

    In 1662 Virginia's hous eof Burgesses decreed that a child's condition followed taht of it's mother.This law applied whether the child was free or unfree. This law permited masters to rape their black women slaves and not have to take repsonsibility for the child. This law was made because white plantation owners wanted to be able to take advantage of their women and not have to pay for the child if it was born.

    Bacon's Rebellion
    Nathaniel Bacon was sent to Virginia to behave better than he had in Britain, it was meant to make his character better. It was a rebellion in Virginias led by Nathaniel bacon. Bacon commanded two successful but unauthorized attacks against neighboring tribes. He was then elected into the House Of Burgesses even after he had gone against the government.
  • Stono's rebellion

    Stono's rebellion
    It was the largest slave rebellion of the britihs colonies. It bagan when the govorner of Spainish Florida promised any slave who escaped his britihs owner that he would be granted freedom in Florida. The governor did this to spite his britihs enemies and any slave who was caught was killed brutally. This caused owners to worry that the slaves would take over them so they wrote the Negro Laws.
  • Meermin Slave mutiny

    Meermin Slave mutiny
    The Meermin slave ship was one of many owned by the Dutch East India Company. On her last voyage half of the ship's crew and 30 Malagasy(the cargo from Malagasy) died. The crew let the slaves loose from their shackles to prevent them from disease or death ebcause of their overcrowded living conditions. They were put to work cleaning weapons and they siezed the ship in attempts to regain their freedom. Massavana was one of the few surviving leaders of this rebellion,he was sentenced to prison.

    This began the talk of liberty,natural rights, however the political leaders who preached this were not talking about african american enslavment. The african americans listened to them declare their freedom against great britian, saying that they had been enslaved. The irony of this situation did not pas through the eyes of the slaves, they wondered and hoped that the whites would realise their wrong by enslaving them.Others such as Samuel Johnson pointed it out.

    Crispus Attucks/ Boston Massacre
    Crispus Attucks was an escaped slave from Framingham. He joined a roudy mob with others who share dthe anti-british sentiment. Accounts say that Attucks hit a soldier with his cub. And he was the first to die when the soldiers fired into the crowd.

    The Declaration of Independance was written to break the colonies off from Great Britian. The continntal congress wrote this document.This is why we celebrate the Forth of July because that was the day that we became our own Union.Caused the irony of the americans fighting for freedom from britian but holding african americans in bondage.

    At this time most northern states except New Jersey and New York had embraced some forms of freedom.Arguing that emancipation would prevent black revolts. Also, many people had taken to supporting the emancipation of blacks from a religious or moral standpoint. Some people in the South even took away some of the brutal tactics they had origibnally been usuing.

    Olaudah Equiano- Arrival in the americans
    Olaudah Equiano was a former slave who wrote his autobiography in 1789. In his autobiography he relays his experiences on arriving in the Americas and while he was on the slave ship. He explains experiences such as: coming into sight of America and being confused, being inspected by white men to be auctioned off.

    England abolished slavery
    In 1807 England abolished slave trade becasue they had come to terms with how brutal and harsh slavery was. However, America was still participating in the slave trade and taking advantage of the african american's labor. It was an Act of Parliament called the slave trade act made in the United Kingdom. It did not abolish slavery itself but the it abolished the trading of it.
