African American Civil Rights

  • Plessy vs Ferguson

    Plessy vs Ferguson was a supreme court case that started the idea of separate but equal and enforced Jim Crow Laws. This case made segregation legal under the conditions that alternative options were provided.
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    After Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat for a white man, African American activists in Montgomery Alabama decided to boycott the bus system. The boycott lasted over a year and was concluded when the government made laws to prevent segregation on public transport.
  • March on Washington

    A march led by Martin Luther King Jr. in Washington DC where over 200,000 people attended to support equal rights. This was where MLK gave his famous "I have a dream" speech.
  • Civil Rights Act

    A law which prohibited discrimination of people by race, color, religion, or sex. This also allowed the government to enforce desegregation and protect African American voting rights.
  • Voting Rights Act

    A law which prevented any discrimination in voting created by the US government to end voting segregation. This included any form of literacy test, and increased African American presence politically.
