Proclamation of 1763
The Proclamation of 1763 set specific limits on where colonists could settle from the Atlantic Ocean to the Appalachian Mountains. The colonists did not like this because it seemed to give them a lack of control and they ended up rebelling. -
Sugar Act
The sugar act was an act that taxed sugar, molasses, and most products that had sugar. The colonists didn't like this because a big trade export they had was rum which used sugar and molasses, because of this they again began protesting and rebelling. -
Currency Act
The Currency Act basically banned the printing of paper money in the colonies. This caused an issue with the colonies because at the time there was a shortage of paper money and currency in general, so this definitely angered the colonists. -
Stamp Act
The Stamp Act was essentially an act that taxed basically all paper goods and many other goods that were essential to basic social needs and life in general. This obviously a huge amount of backlash from the colonies, as not only were they being taxed on things they used daily, but they also had no representation in government to have a say in what happened with the taxes. -
Quartering Act 1765
The Quartering Act of 1765 was basically where the British government passed an act to mandate colonists to house British soldiers in their houses no matter what. This obviously caused a huge backlash with the colonists because not all of them were very happy with Great Britain at this time and many of them were revolting and trying to rebel against them. There was also the matter of safety with a stranger in the house -
Declaratory Act
The declaratory act was essentially a repeal of the Stamp Act which means paper goods were no longer being taxed, this was mostly influenced by London merchants feeling unease at the Stamp Act. This caused relief in most colonists but it also caused a bit of unease because some colonists thought this implied that there was more to come. -
Townshend Act
The Townshend Act was an act that text things like tea paper, paint, and glass, some colonists predicted this would happen after the declaratory act. As a result of this colonists boycotted British goods in general to try to repeal the act. -
Boston Massacre
The Boston massacre was caused by a fight that broke out because of the very high tensions between colonists and British soldiers and loyalists. There were several injured and around five were killed. This heavily influenced the colonists against the British. -
Boston Tea Party
The Boston tea party was a direct political protest where 60 Americans threw 342 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor
as a response to the tax on tea from the Townshend Act. This led to the implementation of intolerable acts. -
Intolerable Acts
The intolerable acts were four laws that were called Boston Port Act, the Massachusetts Government Act, the Administration of Justice Act, and the Quartering Act. These acts were all in retaliation to the Boston tea party. this angered the colonists but inevitably led to them creating a unified approach to the British with the creation of the continental congress. -
Quebec Act
The Quebec Act essentially granted emancipation to the Catholic, French-speaking settlers of the province. This no less angered the colonists as they directly viewed this as a threat to their colonial government forms. -
Quartering Act 1774
This Quartering Act was very similar to the past one where it said that British troops are to be housed in homes but now also stores if they request it. This certainly angered the colonists and made them feel as though they were forced to accept them.
