    Abraham Lincoln was elected on November 6th 1860. He was the 16th president. Abraham was the first member of the Republican party to be elected for presidency. His election led to the chain of events that started the Civil War. Lincoln had 180 electoral votes. 17 out of the 33 states. He was born on Feb. 12, 1809 in Kentucky. His mother died when he was only 10 years old. He made lots of efforts to learn. He married Mary Todd. He had 4 sons. On April 14, 1865 he was assassinated.

    South Carolina wanted to secede from the union. During this the Confederacy was formed. After 3 months of Lincoln being president seven states had seceded from the Union. Five months after his election the north and south were in a civil war. On January 9th 1861 Mississippi followed South Carolina and left the union.

    On September 16, 1862 General McClellan lead the union army into Sharpsburg, Maryland and confronted the confederate army commanded by general Robert E. Lee. On September 17 commander Joseph Hooker of the Union army attacked aggressively at General Lee’s left flank which began the bloodiest battle in United States military history. Continuing on for hours the Union and the Confederates went back and forth making vicious upon vicious attacks at each other never giving in the slightest.

    The Battle of Vicksburg
    On April 30th 1863 General Grant and his army marched across the Mississippi River towards Vicksburg. The commanding General Pemberton had suffered two consecutive losses which forced him to retreat to the defenses of Vicksburg. Grant's idea was to advance and surround the fort at Vicksburg where the confederates were. Pemberton had nowhere to go until reinforcements arrived. On may 19 and 22 Grant sent series after series of soldiers up the hill to attack the confederate defenses.

    In September of 1864 General William Tecumseh Sherman began marched all the way to Atlanta Georgia with the army of Tennessee. General Sherman had finally taken over Georgia and was knifing his way through the Confederacy. This brought great hope to Jethro that the war might soon be over. That Jenny and Shadrach might soon come home. As Sherman continued his march to the sea Jethro as well as many others became more and more excited as he got closer to his final destination in Savannah.
