In 1951 the Federal Minister of Terrirtories, Paul Hasluck started the Assimiltion Policy to integrate Aboriginals into their way of life. He promised that he can make their lives and condtions better, if they can be encouraged to more 'white'.

It is a vote made by the Holt Government to make changes to the Australian Constitution relating to Indigenous Australians. 90.77 of the votes were yes. Aboriginals were now counted in the population.

The Woodward Royal Commsion was setting up Aborginal Land Rights. Woodward wanted to give land to the Aboriginals. Land was restored to the Aboriginals. The Aboriginal Land Rights Acts became law.

The Mabo case is when Eddie Mabo led the Meriam people in a Supreme Court challenge. It was against the Queensland government on a issue of land ownership. Six of the seven High Court Judges ruled in favour of the Meriam people.

The Act set procedures and established ground rules for future native title claims. Wik and Thayorre went to High Court with a native title claim on Cape York. The HIgh Court went in favour of the Wik people.

The House of Representatives has passed legislation recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as the first inhabitants of Australia. Tony Abbot says this is long overdue.
