    First inhabitants- 1000AD or CE

    The first people who lived in Canterbury that is now called Christchurch were moa hunters. they were hunters that cleared large areas of mataī and tōtara forest by fire. Ngati Māmoe and later Ngāi Tahu arrived in Canterbury and The remaining moa hunters were killed or taken into the tribes.
