    The Berlin wall went up August 13, 1961. The government put up barbed wire between the two sides of Berlin and placed guards that will injure you if you try to get to the other side.

    Overnight barbed wire went up and divided Gerta and her family. Gerta’s Dad and younger brother were on the Westside and Gerta’s mom and older brother and her were on the east.

    Gerta gets a drawing from her friend and thinks it was from her dad. The drawing was of a familiar building she has seen before, and realized where it was, and that it was old and abandoned.

    Since Gerta got the drawing and saw her dad dancing she realized he wanted her to dig a tunnel in the building on the drawing. Gerta starts to build a tunnel with her brother Fritz and they are pretending to make a garden around the building so it is not suspicious they are digging a tunnel.

    Gerta and Fritz get there mom to join in on the digging, and they run into their dad digging on the other side. They all run through to the other side (Gerta, Fritz, Gerta’s Mom, the officer and the rest of the officers family.)

    Ronald Reagan visits Berlin and tries to persuade Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the wall, he doesn’t budge.

    The supply stock took place during the cold war. The government thought that it would be too risky to take food from other countries, besides Berlin, so this means that all the food was manufactured in East Berlin. This means most people’s dinner contained of sausages, potatoes and carrots. Other foods were sold on the black market for very high prices

    The Berlin wall finally comes down and people are demanding to be let through and the guards stand back as people stream into the other parts of Berlin. (November 9, 1989)
