    Deffending the Frontier
    In attempts to deffend the frontier, virginia sent George Rogers Clark and a militia force to strike British forts beyond the appalachian mountains in 1778. Clark's forces easily captured two mississippi river outpost (Kaskaskia and cahokia.)

    The battle of Savannah was a battle between patriot militia and continental army. On december of 1778, the British took the city of Savannah. Within a month, they controlled most of Georgia.

    American troops recieved help from Britain in 1779. Bernardo De Galvez, General for the Spain forces in New Spain, attacked Brittish forts along the Mississippi and the Gulf of Mexica.

    Bonhomme Richard Vs. HMS Serapis
    The most famous naval battle took place off the coast of englad in 1779. The American ship Bonhomme Richard under the command of John Paul Jones, fought side by side with the larger British ship HMS Serpis. Jones did not give up, "I have not yet begun to fight," he vowed. The captain of serpis finally surrendered on september 23rd of 1779.

    Pennsylvania was impressed by washingtons decision to allow african americans to fight. they wanted to help too. so an act for Abolition of Slavery, was passed by the Pennsylvania legislature on 1 March 1780. It allowed slaveholders to keep thier existing slaves but barred them from getting more.
  • New General takes charge

    New General takes charge
    Congress told General Washington that it was his duty to appoint a general for the continental army. Washington did not delay in making his selection. On the day after he received a copy of the resolution, he wrote to Nathanael Greene at West Point, "It is my wish to appoint You." The Congress approved the appointment. Greene split his small army in two and led 1,200 men into eastern south carolina.
  • Victory at Yorktown

    Victory at Yorktown
    During this battle, General Cornwallis moved his main army to the yorktown peninsula. then, the french fleet arrived off yorktown and chased off british ships. at the same time, Washington rushed to virgina with american and french troops. Cornwallis had no option but to surrender. on October 19, 1781, the american and french lined up in two colums and watched as the british marched sadly and tossed their weapons into a large pile on the ground. Yorktown was the last major battle of the war.
  • Treaty of Paris

    Treaty of Paris
    After Yorktown, Peace talk begain in paris around 1782.
    Britain recognized the independence of the United States. On April 15th, 1783 the congress approved the treaty. The war was officially over.
