    A fort in the south held by federal troops. First battle of the war. Lincoln sent food by ship to the fort. The battle broke out when Anderson would not surrender.

    Unsuccessful presidential candidate of the Whig party. Scott was the commanding general of the US Army. Promoted to lieutenant general in 1856. The Anaconda plan was to be used to defeat the Confederacy. Called for an advance down the Miss. River to break the south into two parts.

    First major battle of the war. Bull Run creek, Manassas Junction, Virginia. General "Stonewall" Jackson counterattacked and sent troops to Washington. Showed the war was going to last longer than expected.

    18th president of U.S. Lead his troops of the Union Army to defeat the Confederate Army and end the Confederate states. In 1863 he captured Vicksburg, and took control of the Miss. river, making it easier for Union Armies to be victorious.

    Short speech given by pres. Lincoln at the end of the battle of Gettysburg. He redfined the Civil war as a "new birth of freedom". Supposing to bring the two seperate unions together and to have state's rights not be the dominant factor.

    Organized Army of Potomac. General in chief of the Union Army. Tried to seize the Confederate capital of Richmond, and created the Peninsula Campaign. Ran against Lincoln in the 1864 election and lost. 24th governor of New Jersey.

    (Savannah campaign) Lead by Gen. Techumseh Sherman in Georgia. Sherman's troops left the captured city, Atlanta, Georgia, This created significant damage to industry and infrastructure in the south.
