    President of the Confederate states during the war. Proposed a Peace Commission a month before the battle at Fort Sumter. Assigned Robert Lee to replace Johnston in the Army of N. Virginia.

    A fort in the south held by federal troops. First battle of the war. Lincoln sent food by ship to the fort. The battle broke out when Anderson would not surrender.
  • Winfield Scott/Anaconda plan

    Unsuccessful presidential candidate of the Whig party. Scott was the commanding general of the US Army. Promoted to lieutenant general in 1856. The Anaconda plan was to be used to defeat the Confederacy. Called for an advance down the Miss. River to break the south into two parts.

    First major battle of the war. Bull Run creek, Manassas Junction, Virginia. General "Stonewall" Jackson counterattacked and sent troops to Washington. Showed the war was going to last longer than expected.

    Near Hampton roads off of Sewell's Point, otherwise known as the battle of Hampton Roads. First meeting in contact of ironclad warships. Most important naval battle.

    Sharpsburg, Maryland. General Hooker's troops attacked Lee's left flank and after that attacks waged around
  • Fredricksburg

    Fought between Lee's Confederate Army and the Union Army. Union casualties more than twice as many as Confederates. Plan was to cross the Rapp. River at Fredericksbrug and race to Richmond before Lee's army could stop them.

    Written by pres. Lincoln to give official freedom to the 3 million slaves at the time. He would issue formal freedom to those slaves in the Confederate states that did not return to Union control by Jan 1.
  • Vicksburg

    Final major battle of the war. Gen, Grant and his army of Tenneessee and drove out Gen. Pemberton and his confederate army. Grant beseiged the city on May 25.

    18th president of U.S. Lead his troops of the Union Army to defeat the Confederate Army and end the Confederate states. In 1863 he captured Vicksburg, and took control of the Miss. river, making it easier for Union Armies to be victorious.

    Short speech given by pres. Lincoln at the end of the battle of Gettysburg. He redfined the Civil war as a "new birth of freedom". Supposing to bring the two seperate unions together and to have state's rights not be the dominant factor.

    Organized Army of Potomac. General in chief of the Union Army. Tried to seize the Confederate capital of Richmond, and created the Peninsula Campaign. Ran against Lincoln in the 1864 election and lost. 24th governor of New Jersey.

    (Savannah campaign) Lead by Gen. Techumseh Sherman in Georgia. Sherman's troops left the captured city, Atlanta, Georgia, This created significant damage to industry and infrastructure in the south.

    Shot by John Wilks Booth at Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C. It was an attempt to keep the Confederate army fighting, however they were already almost completely defeated. First American president to be assassinated.
