    King Charles II needed money to help fund his wars in Europe and Admiral Penn generously supplied them. King Charles then owed Admiral Penn and his family 16,000 euros
  • England Gains Control

    England Gains Control
    England defeats Holland in a war in Europe and gains control of Holland’s colony—New Amsterdam. Later named New York (Pennsylvania remained a part of New Amsterdam ‘til 1681).
  • Land Granted to William Penn

    Land Granted to William Penn
    King Charles signed the charter granting William Penn Jr. land between Lord Baltimore’s Maryland and the Duke of York’s New York to pay back the debt he owed to Penn’s father.
  • The Great Law

    The Great Law
    The Great Law was adopted in Pennsylvania. It was a fairer and less harsh law then known in England. It included fewer crimes punishable by death, all religions were welcome, prisons became workhouses, and no working on Sunday.
  • The General Assembly

    The proprietor visited Pennsylvania and laid out the capital city, created the three original counties, and summoned a General Assembly (state government).
  • Second Frame of Government

    Second Frame of Government
    The General Assmebly ammended Penn's first Frame of Government (one of the 1st attempts at a law sysytem) and created the Secong Frame of Government.
