Road to the Revolution

  • French and Indian War

    French and Indian War
The French and Indian war was a war between the French and the British. The French and the British were fighting over the land in the Ohio river valley. The British won the war. After the British won, they felt that the Americans should repay the war debt. The British increased the Americans taxes, which leads to the Proclamation Line.
  • Proclamation Line

    Proclamation Line
The Proclamation Line was a barrier for the colonists. The colonist moved westward because the French no longer occupied the area. This aggravated the Native Americans. King George III created a barrier line at the Appalachians. The colonists were not allowed to cross the west side of the line. This is so the colonists wouldn’t interfere with the Native Americans. This made the Americans mad because they just won that land, but yet they couldn't live on it?
  • Sugar Act & Stamp Act

    Sugar Act & Stamp Act
The Sugar Act was the first tax the colonist had to pay. This tax was only on sugar. The colonists didn’t realize that they were paying taxes because the Sugar tax was an indirect tax, meaning that the tax was already added on to the price of the sugar. Then King George III decided to put a tax on printed goods. This was called the Stamp Act. The Stamp Act was a direct tax on all printed goods. When the colonists realized that they were paying more for their goods, they felt violated.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
After the Townshend Act was taking place ( the tax on glass, paint paper and tea) the colonist started boycotting. It all happened when an argument broke out between a soldier and a colonist. Then soon a crowd formed and they started throwing things at the soldiers. Then one colonist threw a wooden club at an officer which knocked him to the ground. Then someone from behind the soldiers yelled FIRE, so the soldiers did. Five colonists were killed, this upset the colonists.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
The Boston Tea Party was a way the colonist showed their hatred of not being treated fairly. The Boston Tea party took place after the Tea Act. The Tea Act made it so that the Americans could only buy tea from one supplier. American colonists saw this law as yet another means of "taxation without representation" because it meant that they couldn't buy tea from anyone else, but that company. So as a reaction to this Act, the colonists dresses as Indians and dumped all the tea into the harbor.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intolerable Acts
The Intolerable Acts consisted of many different acts such as: Quarting Act, Boston Port Bill, Administration of Justice Act,
Massachusetts Government Act and Quebec Act. The Quarting Act required that the colonists housed and supplied the British troops. It first started out with just having them in unoccupied buildings, but it later changed to having them to live in occupied houses and public buildings. The Boston Port Bill closed the port of Boston until they repaid for the tea damage.
  • Continued Intolerable Acts

    Continued Intolerable Acts
The Administration of Justice Act made it so that if the British soldiers did a captial crime, they would be sent back to Britian and tried there. The Massachusetts Government Act made it so that the British governor had complete control from the colonists. And the Quebec Act extended the Canadian borders.
  • Lexington & Concord

    Lexington & Concord
The British were having a rough time so King George III sent in 20,000 troops to America. The King wanted the british soldiers to capture the leader of the militia and execute them. The British troops landed in a marshy area which slowed them down. The British Troops marched through Lexington and were met by the militia. soon shots were fired killing 250 British men and only 90 Americans. This event was known as "Shot heard 'Round the World". This was the major cause of the Revolution.
