  • Roanoke Island Colony

    Roanoke Island Colony
    Roanoke colony was founded by John White of England for economic venture. More then 100 men and women and children traversed across the Atlantic ocean to Roanoke Island,South Carolina. Affiliation with the Indians was moderate few battles occurred. The story of how Roanoke colonists dissapeared is : While important leaders left Roanoke to go to England to resupply, the Roanoke colonists get left alone. When the leaders came back,the colonists were gone and "CROATOAN" was written on a tree.
  • Jamestown Colony

    Jamestown Colony
    Jamestown was settled by the VA company of London. John Smith and colonists land in Jamestown two decades after the colony of Roanoke failed. They chose Jamestown for protection from Spanish warships. Their main objective was to search for gold. John Smith was an important leader, he helped guide the colony. Relations with Indians varied between tribes. During the starving time many suffered and died. As more emmigrated to Jamestown more encounters with indians occurred.
  • Plymouth colony

    Plymouth colony
    Plymouth colony was founded by pilgrims and seperatists in 1620. Plymouth was founded for religous freedom. They went to the new world from religous persecution in England. The mayflower compact was created while on the mayflower as a form of government and a set of goals and establishments. The Virginia Company of Plymouth financed the trip to see if it was possible to establish a colony in VA. William Bradford was appointed to the position of governor. Later it was founded by the MA colony.
  • New Hampshire Colony

    New Hampshire Colony
    New hampshire was founded by John mason for business reasons (fishing). It was under control from the Massachusetts bay colony for much of it's colonial life. Captain Thomas Wiggin was the first governor of a province in New Hampshire. John Mason sent men to New Hampshire to start this colony. In 1641 the few towns there were in New Hampshire decide to join the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In 1691 New Hampshire became a crown colony.
  • New York Colony

    New York Colony
    The New York colony was first founded by the dutch and named it Nieuw Nederlands. It was later surrendered to the British in 1664. The British sought after New York for economic venture. New york was divided into 12 different counties in 1683. Slaves were a major import for NYC. The NY Colony was given as a gift to the Duke of York. In King George's War, the settlement of Saratoga was devastated. About 3000 Germans emigrated to NY . They were used to open up shops in New York for naval ware.
  • Massachusetts Bay Colony

    Massachusetts Bay Colony
    The Massachusetts Bay colony was founded by the Puritans in 1630 for religous freedom. Religous persecution in England forced the puritans to voyage to the new world. John Winthrop and Thomas Dudley were major leaders in the colony. John Winthrop served as governor. Dudley occasionally served as well. Winthrop and Dudley's ideas varied. Winthrop allowed many freedoms for people especially women while Dudley didn't. Massachusetts' government was also different than England's form of government.
  • Maryland Colony

    Maryland Colony
    Maryland was founded by Lord Baltimore for religious freedom for Catholics in 1634. Lord Baltimore released the Toleration Acts during this time, which said all Christian religons are welcome in Maryland. In 1650, Puritans dominated the population of Maryland, revolting against the appointed governor causing a change in government. A Puritan controlled government then outlawed certain religions and made stricter laws for religion. Maryland's main livelyhood was fishing in Baltimore harbor.
  • Connecticut Colony

    Connecticut Colony
    Founded by Thomas Hooker for religous freedom for Puritans. Thomas Hooker was governor of Connecticut and also largely involved in the congregational church formed by puritans. Fishing was important to the economy. Most of the population were fishermen. People who were late to church on sunday were to pay a special tax. The colony was the first to have a written form of government. White land owners who were church members could vote.
  • Rhode Island Colony

    Rhode Island Colony
    Rhode Island was founded by Roger Williams for religious freedom for all in 1636. The government was separate from the church in this colony because Roger Williams was kicked out of the Massachusetts Bay colony for having different religious beliefs. Roger Williams also respected the Native Americans.
  • Delaware Colony

    Delaware Colony
    Delaware was founded by the New Sweden Company in 1638.It was later controlled by the Dutch then by the British for business reasons. The dutch contorolled it in the late 1600's and the British took control in the early 1700's. The reason the Dutch were exploring in that region was for a Northwest passage to Asia. Delaware was named for Lord De La Warr a governor of Virginia. Delaware was originally included in the area William Penn had received. Delaware was later seperated from Penn.
  • Pennsylvania Colony

    Pennsylvania Colony
    Pennsylvania was founded by William Penn and Quakers in 1681 for religous freedom.The Quaker religion believed in tolerance and were pacifists, meaning that they didn't believe in violence They also allowed people with different beliefs live Pennslyvania without persecution of religion. William Penn was friendly with the natives and created peace treaties to help cope. The Pennsylvanians and the natives had a healthy relationship. Pennsylvania literally means "Penn's Woods."
  • Georgia Colony

    Georgia Colony
    Georgia was founded by James Ogelthorpe in 1733. Georgia was a colony for debtors from England who have been in debtors prison. Another reason Georgia was a established was to create an obstacle for the Spanish that were in Florida to get to the Carolinas. There were strict laws regarding alcohol in Georgia preventing buying selling and comsumption of it. The border between Georgia and Florida had large forts to protect against attack. One fort was eroded to a point where it became rubble.
