Five Crucial Historical Events in Education

  • Native American Boarding Schools

    Native American Boarding Schools
In the 1860s the Bureau of Indian Affairs created the first boarding schools for Indians in the United States. The idea was to assimilate Native American children into the Western European culture and completely displace these children from their native culture and homes. This historical event has traumatized and split Native American families. It was a tragic time in the United States educational history, where our nation failed to recognize the importance of diversity and unity.
  • Pierce vs. Society of Sisters Case

Pierce vs. Society of Sisters Case
The Society of Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary found that the 1917 and 1922 Complusory Attendance Statute was unconstitutional due to the 14th amendment. This court case helped to direct the future of education in the United States by giving families the choice to private or public schooling. Although religion and education should not be commonly practiced in public schools, United States citizens have the right to an education that they would prefer.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    Brown vs. Board of Education
On May 17th, 1954, the Supreme Court ruled that segregated schools do not provide an equal opportunity to education. Brown vs. Board of Education assisted in deconstructing segregation and Jim Crow Laws in the educational system in the United States. Although this court case changed the history of our educational system, our nation still has a ways to go to breakdown the de jure segregation in cities and continue to desegregate the school districts.
  • Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972

Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972
Title IX followed the 1965 presidential executive order that did not allow for federal contractors to discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, or origin. Women have been prevented from an equal opportunity to education since before the 1970s. Women in education has always been a good idea, unfortunately our nation had to write a law for our society to understand the important role women have in our society.
  • Nabozny vs. Podlesny

    Nabozny vs. Podlesny
While attending the public school in Ashland, WI, Jamie Nabonzny was physically, emotionally, and sexually harassed for being openly gay even after Nabonzny asked teachers and the administration for help. Each child in a school has the right to protection from bullying and life threatening situations regardless of their sexual preference, gender identity, religious practices, and any other characteristics. This ruling finally gave recognition to the gay students and communities in schools.
