Odysseus's company encounter the Cicones, allies of the Trojans. Odysseus and his men raid the Cicones, but the Cicones soon retaliate and kill 72 of Odysseus's men.

Odysseus sends out men to explore an island, but the men are given delicious lotus. which makes them never want to leave the island. Odysseus ties the men up to the boat and leaves soon after.

Odysseus lands on the Cyclopes' Island and enters Polyphemos's cave. Polyphemos keeps Odysseus and his men in his cave until Odysseus comes up with a plan to get out. He gets the cyclops drunk and sneaks out under sheep.

After the escape on the Cyclopes' island, Odysseus and his men land on Aeolus's island. Aeolus wants to hear about all the adventures Odysseus has had before landing on his island. Before Odysseus leaves, Aeolus, being the wnd king, gives him a good wind, and a bag of bad winds.

Odysseus stays with Aeuolus for a month.

Cannibals bombard Odysseus's fleet with boulders. Only Odysseus's ship and a crew of 45 men make it alive.

Odysseus lands on Aeaea, Circe's island. Some men go to explore but encounter Circe, who turns them into pigs. Eurylochus, the only one who did not trust Circe, was not turned into a pig. He ran back to Odysseus, who, with Hermes moly, got the men back. However, Circe did not release them. They stayed with her for a year before Odysseus begged for his men to be released.

Circe said that Odysseus was to travel to the land of the dead if he wanted his men to be released. Circe says that he must seek a prophecy from Tiresias. He travels to the land of the dead and encounter many people from his life, including his mother. In horror, Odysseus returns to Circe. Odysseus sets sail without telling Circe about his travel.

Odysseus returns to Circes island. She talks to him to hear about the land of the dead. Then Circes tells him about the Sirens, Scylla, and Charybdis. Odysseus must decide to go through Scylla, or Charybdis.

Odysseus covers his mens ears with beeswax and cloth to make sure they cannot listen to the Sirens songs. His men tie him up to the ships mast so he can listen to the sirens without doing anything. Eventually they go away.

Odysseus decides to pass Charybdis, and instead go through Scylla, the monster. She eats six of Odysseus's best men, but with constant rowing, they bypass her. After the encounter with Scylla, they land on Thrinacia, and eat the cattle of Helios, the sun god. Helious threatens to stop shining if payment is not made. Zues strikes Odysseus's ship and all but Odysseus are killed.

Odysseus, after being struck by Zues's thunderbolt, lands on Calypso's island. She has been told in a message from Zues, sent by Hermes, that she must let Odysseus get home. Odysseus builds a raft with Calypso's help and sets sail.

Odysseus meets King Alcinous, who holds a banquet in Odysseus's honor. King Alcinous helps Odysseus get back to Ithica, ending the advntures of his way home.
