  • Jamestown settlement

    Jamestown settlement
    First successful English settlement in North America. Jamestown was located on the Virginia coast on Chesapeake Bay. It was named after King James 1 of England. It influenced the early settlements in our counrty. It also planted the seed to which our country was formed.
  • Mayflower Compact

    The Mayflower Compact was a document signed by 41 English colonist aboard the Mayflower ship. The compact was written to prevent a disagreement between the Puritans and non seperatist Pilgrims at Plymouth. Without the Mayflower Compact our country wouldn't have been established.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    The U.S. Purchased approximately 828,000,000 square miles of land from France. It expanded from the Canadian border to the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains to the Gulf of Mexico. 15 states were created. Without the Lousianna Purchase there would we 35 states in this country instead of 50.

    California Gold Rush

    The first flake of gold was found by James Wilson Marshall, but that isn't what started the frenzy. Sam Brannan is the one who started the frenzy when he walked through town showing off his vial of gold he found at Sutter's Creek. In 1849 men started borrowing money, morgaging their property or spending their life savings just to go to California. The gold rush was one of the most important things that shaped our country.

    Suffrage Movement

    A group of mostly women gathered at Seneca Falls, New York and dicussed women's rights. People thought that men and women should be equal and have the same rights. Women our now able to vote in our country because of the movement.
  • Lincoln's assasination

    Lincoln's assasination
    In 1865, John Wilkes Booth shot President Lincoln at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. A doctor named Charles Leale was in the audience and heard the shot. He found Lincoln slumped over paralyzed and struggling to breathe. He was then carried to a house across the street where a surgeon told the first lady he would not make it. He was pronounced dead at 7:22 am the next day. The nation mourned over the loss of their president.

    WW1

    World War 1 was started when Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assinated. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia leading to the beginning of WW1. The end of WW1 ended with the ceasfire agreement and the Treaty of Versailles. Wilson warned that if we went into war the country would forget the word tolerance and we did.

    Prohibition

    The manufacture, sale, or transporation of alcohol was illegal during the prohibition. A loophole in this was if a doctor prescribed a person alcohol. On December 5, 1933 the 18th amendment was repealed by the 21st amendement allowing alcohol to be legal. The prohibition ruined the country's brewing industries.

    Fall of Berlin Wall

    The Berlin wall was set up to divide East and West Germany. Not all escape attempts were successful. The ones who were unsuccessful were killed. People were shocked when the wall fell. Some began destroying it with hammers and chisels. The fall of Berlin Wall was a joyous reunion for both East and West Germany. It reunited Germany as a whole.
  • Trail of tears

    Trail of tears
    The trail of tears started with the Indian Removal Act. Indians were forced to give up their land and move to what is present day Oklahoma. The journey was called Trail of Tears because of the things they dealt with. Trail of tears is the reason we have many different indian tribes through our country.
