    With the end of World War 1, the League of Nations (United States, Italy, France, and Britian) passed the Treaty of Versailles to punish Germany. Germany payed over 30 billion dollars to pay for WWI.

    The people of Germany were angry over their defeat of World War 1. One of the extreme nationalist was Adolf Hitler. Adolf Hitler was recently appointed leader of a small group that was a fascism, known as the Nazi Party.

    After World War 1, Italy's economic problems led to unrest. Benito Mussolini and his followers threatened to overthrow Italy's elected government in October 1922. The King, not wanting to start another war, appointed Mussolini prime minister.

    In 1936, Hitler began to rebuild Germany's army. Even though it violated the treaty of Versailles, European Democrats did nothing to stop him. Troops were sent into Rhineland, and two years later, Austria was under the comands of Germany.

    To appease Hitler, European leaders went to Munich to create a treaty. The treaty gave Germany a peice of Czechoslovakia's land; also know as Sudentenland. In agreement, Hitler promised not to seek any further land.

    In 1939, the two bitter and sworn enimies signed a nonagression agreement. To the public, it looked as though the two leaders had made an areement not to attack each others countries, when they had sesecretly agreed to dividing up Poland, once it was over taken.

    With Germany and the Solviet Union in an allience, they attack Poland. Stalin and his forces overtook eastern Poland,and later Finland, Estonia,Lithuania, and Latvia. Two days after the invasion, Britian and France both joined the war.

    Just months after taking Poland, Hitler moves his west. Hitler and the Nazis took Denmark and Norway. Later in May, they seized the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Belgium. After claming most of Europe they headed into France.

    Hitler's next target, was the island of Great Britain. Winston Churchill made it very clear though that it was not going to be easy. At night, when German air forces attacked, Londoners slept in the subways. With Winston Churchill's power and the British spirit, they eventually drove Hitler away.

    Britain was not doing so well with the war, and for precaution, Roosevelt had a peacetime draft put into place. The first peacetime draft had all men between the ages of 18 and 25 enlist for the army.

    Only a little more than a year after the treaty was made, Hitler broke his allience with the Solviet Union. In December of 1940, Hitler had his troops invade Russia, but they fought back. Eventually, they were able to push Germany out and later joined the Allies.

    On December 7,1941, the Japanese bombed the Island of Oahu and killed thousands. They had chosen the Hawii Island, because it was the base of the U.S. military. An attack was not even thought to be possible and not even thought of, espically from the sky. Shortly after the attack, the U.S declared war on Japan.

    Philippines Fall-Bataan Death March
    Just hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japan also attacked the Philippines. With the bombing on Pearl Harbor, they had damaged most of the planes that would have been able to protect the Philippines. On April 9, 1942, the island of Bataan surrendered to the Japanese. From the surrender, the Japaneses gained almost 70,000 soldiers The soldiers were forced to walk 65 miles to the camp, which along the way, many died. The walk became known as the Bataan Death March.

    With the countless attacks from the Japanese, many were questioning the Japanese-Americans. To protect America, the government forced all Japanese-Americans into internment camps. They were only allowed to bring their most prized possessions. After the war was over, the Japanese-American were paid 20,000 for the governments apology.

    The American troops took controll of Italy's island Sicily after crossing into the Mediterranean Sea. The King of Italy dismissed Mussolini from office, and the new government it Italy, surrendered to the Allies.

    On June 6 1944, more than 155,00 troops from the Allie side stormed upond the shore of Normandy. Four of the five German troops were easily overtaken. The fitfh troop, however was not. More than 2,500 American soldiers dided on the fifth beach, but within a month, more than a million troops landed on the shore.

    A few months after D-Day, the Allies entered Paris. Men women, and children rejoiced as they were set free. After more than four years under the Nazi power, they were finally back to normal.

    As Alli troops pushed into Germany, Hitler sent all his last troops to protect them. Bad weather slowed the Allies for the first week, allowing the German troops to create a "bulge" in American lines.Luckily, German troops were running out of supplies and out of soldiers. Finally, the American troops were able to push through the German forces, leaving Germany wide open.

    Hiroshima was destroyed on the sixth of August because of an Atomic bomb, dropped by the Americans. Harry Truman wanted to end the war with Japan once and for all. Just three days later, the second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. The first bomb kiled over 130,000 people and the second killed 35,000.
