    The Great Slaughter

    Within ten months, over 700,000 men lost their lives over just a few square miles of terrain. The trenches in Verdun, France were filled with unimaginable horrors, and clouds of confusion. The men on the battlefield lived with the persistent presence of death, and did not spend a lot of time on the front line. The men who were there believed the battle to be predictable, and that everyone there was going to die either from the terrain or the battle itself.
