  • The Compromise of 1877

    This was an informal and unwritten agreement that gave presidentship to Rutherford Hayes. The terms stated that the troops needed to be removed from South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana.

  • The Tariff Act of 1890

    The Tariff Act of 1890 raised the average duty on imports up to fifty percent and was sanctioned to help protect domestic industries from foreign competition.
  • Spanish-American war

    Lasted over three months. The US declared war on Spain with the sinking of the Battleship Maine. Fought largely in part over the Independence of Cuba. Major battles took place in the Philippines and the Spanish colonies of Cuba.

    The Treaty of Paris was signed by the United States and Spain and is what ended the Spanish-American War. Under this treaty, Cuba gained independence from Spain and the US gained possession of the Philippines, Puerto Rico and Guam.
