    President Franklin Pierce tried to purchase Cube from Spain but Spain responded with "they would rather see Cuba sunk in the ocean". This attempt wouldn't be Americans last because the U.S. was still interested in Cuba. The importance of this event use that I was the beginning of the continuous Americans interest and involvement with Cuba.

    Cuda's first war of independence from Spain was mostly about the treatment of the civilians from the government. Even though Spain made promises, Spain didn't keep them or enforce them. One thing the Cuban people did force Spain to abolish slavery but didn't work, therefore making the Cuban revolt against Spain unsuccessful. This is important because it would lead Cuba to have its second war of independence.

    Josí Martí was a poet and journalist from Cuda that was exile to New York. He organized resistance against Spain.     The yellow press was a journalist writing about the treatment of the Cuban civilian under Valeriano Weyler. Writers write to the New York Times and other newspapers to inform people what was happening in Cuba during this time so other people would get invalid and rebel against the Cuban government. This event is important because it would inform the US of what was happening in Cuba and soon get invalid.

    Spain sent General Valeriano Weyler to Cuba to restore order. General Weyler would lead under Spanish rules. His goal was to crush the rebellion. He would do this by herding the entire
    rural population of central and western Cuba into barbed-wire concentration camps. This event is important because these would lead the yellow journalism to exspones the Cuda goverment, therefore showing the the U.S. the treatment of the civilians in Cuba.

    A journal published a letter that the Cuban rebel had stolen from a Hanana post office and had leaked out to the newspaper. It criticized American President William McKinley by calling him weak. This would important because it would influence the President's decisions with the war.

    Commodore George Beway gave orders to fire at the Spanish fleet at Manila which is the capital of the Philippines. Destroying every Spanish ship there allowing the U.S. troops to land in the Philippines. This event is important it allowed the U.S. to get ahead in the War in the Philippines.

    Due to the naval force in Manila bay, the U.S. gained superiority. So the troops left were ill-prepared and largely inexperienced because people were willing to join the Spanish war. In June 1898 the U.S. send these troops to Cuba. The U.S. troops then first stormed Sanitago ported. This is important because this would soon cause Spain to surrender to Cuba, the Philippines, and Puerto Rico.

    Battle of San Juan Hill was the last battle in Cuba. Two regiment Africa-Americans and Rough Riders fought the Spanish on the hill. The Rough Riders were led by TR. This would be the U.S.'s second victory against Spain in the war. This is important because this was a major battle that would benefit the Cubans.

What led to this was the US troops joining the Filipinos rebels led by Emilio Aguinaldo that fought for independence from Spain. This is important because the Philipines got their independence from Spain and the US got a temporary territory.

    Spain and the United States met in Paris to have a peace talk. The arrangement they agreed upon to end the Spanish War was Spain freeing Cuba and giving Spain freed Cuba and turned over the islands of Guam in the Pacific and Puerto Rico in the West Indies to the US. Also, Spain sold the Philipines to the US for $20 million. This is important because this event settled the year-long war.
