1850-1861 Timeline

  • Uncle Toms Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin was a book written by Harriet Beecher concerning the harsh lives slaves had to live. It also went into detail about what these slaves had to go through on a daily basis. This sparked tension between the North and South as more people became anti-slavery because of this book and its brutal honesty about slavery.
  • Republic Party created

    The Republican Party was founded by anti-slavery individuals (Abraham Lincoln) that were against the Kansas-Nebraska Act which separated Missouri into two different territories (Kansas and Nebraska) so that there wouldn't be an imbalance within the Senate when it came to free and slave states.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    The Kansas Nebraska Act was something that was something that was created by Stephen A Douglas in response to the Missouri Compromise being repealed. This act created two new territories that would be ruled by popular sovereignty as they could decide whether or not they wanted to be a slave state. It however caused a lot of disruption as pro slavery and anti slavery activists both went into the two new territories to try and sway the vote to their favor.
  • Bloody Kansas

    Bloody Kansas was a series of brutal fights and confrontations in Kansas territory. These fights were sparked between the proslavery and the anti slavery activists because of the controversy over whether or not Kansas should be a free or a slave state.
  • Brooks Sumner

    The Brooks Sumner incident was cause because of Brooks (proslavery) being highly bothered by Sumner (abolitionist) verbally attacking Brooks older brother in his speech. In Sumner's speech he attacked and called out slavery and the Senators who supported it, Brooks' older brother being one who supported it. This caused Brooks to attack Sumner in a head with a walking cane, permanently damaging him.
  • Dred Scott

    Dred Scott was an enslaved African American man who was owned by John Emerson. Scott and Emerson went into a free state while Emerson was still alive, even though slavery was prohibited in the state they entered. Scott then went on to sue Emerson's wife
  • House Divided

    On June 16, 1858 Lincoln gave his House Divided speech at the Illinois State Capital which covered the Dred Scott case. Lincoln stated that the courts decision on Dred Scotts case would legalize and normalize slavery in the north and in new territories that the U.S. would expand to.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debate

    The Lincoln Douglas debates were against Abraham Lincoln (Republican) and Stephen A. Douglas (Democrat). The cause for these debates were because of the controversial issue of slavery, popular sovereignty being used to manage where it will and will not be free, and the possible spread of slavery into new U.S. territories.
  • LeCompton Constitution

    The Lecompton Constitution was a Constitution composed by proslavery southerners. The constitution composed of things like a bill of rights that excluded African Americans, clauses that advocated for and justified the use of slavery which was a big step to leading to the Civil War.
  • Harp Ferry

    Harp Ferry was where John Brown led 21 men to an arsenal in Virginia to collect weapons for the slaves to help them rebel and become free from their masters. However, majority of Browns crew did not make it very far and were killed along with the rest being arrested on sight.
  • John Brown

    John Brown was an American abolitionist who strived to end slavery and to set all African Americans free. Brown said he gained all his intentions and plans from God, who he claims is using him to free the slaves. John Brown was the root of Bleeding Kansas, Harp Ferry, and he was at fault for the Pottawatomie massacre where he and several other men brutally murdered several slave owners. He was then sentenced to be hanged for his crimes even though he did not consider them crimes, but help.
  • Election of 1860

    The election of 1860 was a very messy and controversial time for the U.S. With this election the main issue was slavery and the spread of slavery into new territories. The election caused secession, it caused the federal government to become split, slavery tensions to rise, and it caused further anger in abolitionist. However, the main issue was slavery.
  • Secession

    The Secession of South Carolina happened in response to Lincoln becoming President. The South did not favor Lincoln in the slightest nor did they support his ideals of abolishing slavery (obviously since they were southerners) which is what caused them to secede.
  • Lincolns 1st Inaugural

    In Lincolns 1st Inaugural address he covered the fact that all the events that had been happening the U.S. could and would lead to the start of a Civil War. He also stated that he would still enforce the U.S. laws on the states that had seceded. Lincoln strived for peace between the Northern and Southern states even though they had two very different perspectives, however he did not get that. He also stated that even though there was not peace, he would not tolerate seceding either.
