  • Uncle Toms Cabin

    Uncle Toms Cabin was a book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe that gave a perspective on the life of a slave. However people thought that it was exaggerated, but it still increased anti-slavery support in the north.
  • Republican Party

    The Republican Party came to be with the purpose of halting slaver from expanding any further by passing acts such as the Kansas-Nebraska Act. The party was made up of Northerners, successful farmers, business men, and factory workers.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    The Kansas-Nebraska Act worked to repeal the Missouri compromise, let popular sovereignty decide whether a state is free or slave, and create Kansas and Nebraska.

    Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas was a period of time in which pro-slavery groups and abolitionist fought over control for of the majority. It also made it clear the the decision of slavery would lead to violence.
  • Election 1856

    Amongst alleged voter fraud and the Whig Party collapsing over the Kansas-Nebraska Act all led to a very controversial election. It ended with the Democrat James Buchanan won over Republican John C. Fremont.
  • Dred Scott

    The Supreme Courts decision in this case showed its support for slavery as it called for blacks not being citizens of the U.S. as well as declaring that the Missouri compromise was unconstitutional.
  • Lecompton Constitution

    The Lecompton Constitution was written be pro-slavery Kansas to support slavery, and exclude free blacks. This constitution was rejected and Kansas came into the Union a free state.
  • House Divided Speech

    Lincolns famous House Divided Speech was a bold claim that "A house divided cannot stand" and that if the U.S. wanted to be a free country then they would have to act quickly or slavery would also take over the north.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debates

    The Lincoln Douglas Debates help to relight the fire in Lincolns political career and Douglas used the debates to show and spread his support for popular sovereignty which ended up pushing him from his party.
  • Harper's Ferry

    John Brown led a raid on Harper's Ferry which was an armory to gain weapons to arm slaves.
  • John Brown

    John Brown was a crazy abolitionist who worked with a group of armed slaves he freed. He led that attack on Harpers Ferry and was executed due to his actions. Not all slaves awaited his arrival and some didn't want to be freed.
  • Election 1860

    This was the election before the Civil War in which Lincoln beat John C. Breckinridge, Stephen A. Douglas, and John Bell. This election showed the sectional divide in the U.S. due to slavery.
  • Lincoln's 1" inaugural Address

    Lincolns inaugural address was mainly addressed towards southerners in which he talked about not uprooting slavery as well as lessening federal government interference where there is some hostility. However he voiced his animosity for secession and taking control over government property.
  • Secession

    The South seceded from the union and became the Confederate States of America. The reasons mainly behind the secession were slavery and state rights.
