1850-1861

  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

-Uncle Tom’s Cabin written by Harriet Beecher Stowe who was a big anti-slavery supporter at the time wrote the book to shed light on the injustice of slavery. She makes the novel to signify the destructive nature of slavery and how it brings the people farther apart not just because of beliefs but because of the hurt that is placed on African Americans. This had led to eventual war because the South banned the book because of the bad image it placed on the South.
  • Republican Party

-The republican party was made in 1854 to replace the Whig party and to give it a new name and meaning. This new meaning was to form a group of members who are opposed to slavery expanding into western states the party was made of people who were against slavery in the first place. This had made the south even angrier because they now had a whole political party against them.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

The Kansas Nebraska Act allowed for both Kansas and Nebraska which split to decide based on popular sovereignty if they would be a slave state and legalize slavery. This in turn led to Bleeding Kansas which meant anti and pro-slavery activists were going to rush to these territories to try and raise the votes.
  • Bloody Kansas

-Bloody Kansas was kinda like a small civil war between anti slavery and slavery activists. There was constant fighting between the two. This all occurred after the new creation of Kansas. Its crazy the main cause was just the debate between the legiazation of slavery.Bloody Kansas would allow the North to open up to slavery.
  • Brooks-Sumner incident

-Brooks, who was a proslavery democrat, had walked into the U.S. Senate and began to beat Sumner who was an anti-slavery republican with a walking cane. The reason Brooks did this was because a few days earlier Sumner had an attitude when addressing the Senate and arguing that Kansas should be a free state. This was very cherished by the Southerners but was a big disappointment and embarrassment to the Northerners.
  • Election 1856

The election of 1856 was a three-way election. The winner of this election was James Buchanan. There were 3 candidates: John Fremont, James Buchanan, and Millard Fillmore.
This was the only time in U.S history that any political party was denied renominations to an incumbent president and succeeded in winning.
  • LeCompton Constitution

-This was a document made by people who supported slavery in Kansas. The document was made to justify and try to solidify Kansas as a slave state because it was a fight for power and to obtain as many states in their favor at the time. Kansas had rejected this document because of the fraudulent voting that had gone on in the past because the pro-slavists were so desperate to have Kansas be a slave state.
  • Dred Scott

-Dred Scott was an African American who had been a slave and during his time of being a slave his “owner” had passed away and also during his time of being a slave he had resided in a free state and also stepped foot over borders many times. This had led to Scott trying to free himself in court and sue his new owner to apply for citizenship to become a free slave. But the court had ruled that he cannot sue in court or become a citizen in any way because he is a slave.
  • House Divided Speech

-This was one of the most important speeches ever given by Abraham Lincoln. He talks about how after the Decision with Dred Scott that it was bound for slavery to be open to the North and it to be legalized in the exspanded territories. He talks about how he doesnt believe the nation can withstand being split but also being the same. He says it won't be much longer until it's either slaves or no slaves and there is no inbetween.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debates

-The Lincoln Douglas Debates were a series of debates throughout Illinois in which Lincoln and Douglas debated about their stance on ideas publicly. Lincoln had asked Douglas about the Dred Scott situation and had placed him in a situation where no matter what he answered he was in a bad place with someone. This had led to Lincoln winning the Senate election and increasing tensions between the North and South because Lincoln was a big abolitionist and really wanted slavery to be abolished.
  • Harper's Ferry

John Brown led a group of people into Harpers Ferry hoping to start a revolt and free enslaved people and bring slavery to an end. This caused there to light on just how much conflict there was between the North and the South. The North was happy about this even though they thought it was a little out of line to do and the South thought it was a bit intimidating.
  • John Brown

John Brown was executed on December 2nd 1859 because he was suspended of committed treason, insurrection, and for the murder of all the people he killed. He was executed by hanging. This calmed the south because they thought there wouldn't be any more revolts.
  • Election 1860

-The election of 1860 featured Lincoln, Douglas, Breckenridge, and Bell. Lincoln won the election not by the majority vote but based on the Electoral College vote. This had caused some of the South to succeed because they did not believe in the same ideals as Lincoln. This had been the main conflict and one reason for the start of the Civil War.
  • Secession

The south seceded because they didn't believe that Lincoln was a fair or fit candidate to govern over them because of how radical of an abolitionist he was and the South believed that he would impose many laws and policies against them in the ultimate goal of ending slavery. So they stood their ground and decided to leave the nation which had started the Civil War and the fight over slavery.
  • Lincoln's 1st inaugural Address

-Lincoln's 1st inaugural Address was given to me when he was taking the oath and being sworn into office. Lincoln was loved by the North and wasn't liked at all in the South. Linocle had to make sure he wasn't only fair to the north but that he was also fair to the south even though they didn't really get along.
