1763-1774 Timeline

  • Proclamation of 1763

    It was a law that didn’t allow the colonists to move west because they were still in debt and they didn’t want them to encounter a new enemy and cause another war. The colonists ignored them and moved west to claim more land.
  • Sugar Act

    The act placed a tax on cougar, wine, coffee, and more. The colonists thought that it was getting in the way of their trading and they would be losing a lot more money just to enjoy certain delicacies.
  • Currency Act

    Parliament wouldn’t be printing any old bills and will not let them print any new bills. So that would lead to the colonists only being able to pay their debt off with gold and silver. This would lead to the colonists with little money to be able to trade with.
  • Quartering Act 1765

    The act let the British soldiers stay in the colonies in their barracks and public houses. While the colonists were mad that their tax money was going to them.
  • Stamp Act

    Parliament set up a tax that practically taxes paper in order to pay off debt from the French & Indian war. This angered the merchants since it would make them lose money and bankrupt them.
  • Declaratory Act

    The act removed the Stamp Act, but it allowed the British Parliament to have complete power over the colonies. The colonists probably had mixed emotions, because they got rid of the Stamp Act but Great Britain now has complete power over the colonies.
  • Townshend Act

    The Townshend Act put a tax on ALL goods imported to the colonies. This angered the colonists because now they have to pay taxes just for things to get to them.
  • Boston Massacre

    British Soldiers shot a group of Colonists and ended up killing 5 men. This caused the colonists to reestablish the committees of correspondence which helped news get out of what the British were doing.
  • Boston Tea Party

    This was a raid on a tea shipment and it was one of the first acts against the British.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Great Britain responded to the Boston Tea Party by making the Colonists pay for all the tea that was dumped and they closed the port which didn’t allow for trade to take place.
  • Quartering Act 1774

    This made all the colonies have to house British soldiers.
  • Quebec Act

    Allowed freedom of religion and gave emancipation to the Catholics.
