    The Missouri Compromise did not allow slavery above the 36 30 line. This caused sectionalism between the north and south.
  • War with Mexico

    War with Mexico
    The war was caused by "manifest destiny". Which is the thought that God wanted the US to expand. It was ended with the Treaty of Gauadalupe Hidalgo which gave the US a large area of land in the southwest for 15 million dollars.

    Wilmot's Proviso
    This document was going to ban slavery in all the new territory gained from the Mexican War. This caused stress between the north and the south over the question of slavery

    The Northand free slaves were againts this law because you could get thrown in jail for not turning over a run away slave. The free slaves did not like it because they were accused of being slaves.

    This law repealed the Missourri compromise because it allowed the people of the states to decide if they would have slavery. These two states were above the 36 30 line.
