  • Dien Bien Phu

    North Vietnamese take the French command post at Dien Bien Phu. The French commander orders his troops to cease fire. The battle had lasted 55 days. Three thousand French troops were killed, 8,000 wounded. This is important because they have the us military power.
  • Creation of the Ho Chi Minh Trial

    Group 559, a north vietnamese group, was formed to create a supply route from North Vietnam to Vietcong forces in South Vietnam. Group 559 develops a primitive route along the Vietnamese/Cambodian borderknown as the Ho Chi Minh Trail. This event was important because lit made him president and symbol of Vietnamese Communism.
  • U.S. becomes involved

    Now President Kennedy orders help for the South Vietnamese government in its war against the Vietcong guerrillas. U.S. backing includes new equipment and more than 3,000 military advisors. This ios important because the south vietamese people were getting weaker
  • Operation Ranchland

    The goal was is to clear vegetation alongside highways, making it more difficult for the Vietcong to be asambushes. Vast tracts of forest are sprayed with "Agent Orange," an herbicide containing the deadly chemical Dioxin. Guerrilla trails and base areas are exposed, and crops that might feed Vietcong units are destroyed. This is important because sending renforcements, the N Vietnam people will be weak
  • Gulf of Tonkin

    The South Vietnamese commandos attack two small North Vietnamese islands in the Gulf of Tonkin. The U.S. destroyer Maddox, is south witch orders to electronically simulate an air attack to draw North Vietnamese boats away from the commandos. This is important because they destroyed the two major northern military sites in Nam.
  • Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

    The U.S. congress passes the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, giving President Johnson the power to take whatever actions he sees necessary to defend southeast Asia. This is important because they can send any of our personell for protection and defense against N. Nam.
  • Rolling Thunder begins

    Operation Rolling Thunder was authorized by LBJ. It's a limited but long lasting bombing offensive. Its aim is to force North Vietnam to stop supporting Vietcong guerrillas in the South. This event was important because it gives us the advantage to end the war very quickly
  • US officers peace for economic aid proposal

    LBJ offers North Vietnam economic aid in exchange for peace, but the offer is denied. Two weeks later, LBJ raises America's combat strength in Vietnam to more than 60,000 troops. Allied forces from Korea and Australia are added as a sign of international support. This is important because were sending a lot of troops to support htse other countries
  • 1st major battle Vietnam War For American Units

    The two-part battle took place at two landing zones (LZ's) northwest of Plei Me in the Central Highlands of South Vietnam. The Vietnamese forces included the National Liberation Front (NLF) of the H15 Battalion. Both sides suffered heavy losses and both claimed victory. The U.S. lost 234 dead, with 242 wounded. This is major because the people know that the war will take a long time to end communisim.
  • American forces total 385,000

    American forces in Vietnam reach 385,000 men, plus an additional 60,000 sailors stationed offshore. More than 6,000 Americans have been killed, and 30,000 have been wounded. 61,000 Vietcong have been killed. However, their troops now numbered over 280,000. This is important because the number of troops in america are decreasing wich is a bad advantage to win the war.
  • Operation Junction City

    The goal of Junction City was to destroy Vietcong bases and the Vietcong military headquarters for South Vietnam. Some 30,000 U.S. troops take part in the mission, joined by 5,000 men of the South Vietnamese Army. After 72 days, Junction City ends. American forces succeed in capturing large quantities of stores, equipment and weapons, but there are no large, decisive battles. This is important because we took all of the supplies th N. Vietnamese people need to win the war.
  • Tet Offensive

    The Tet Offensive was a military campaign by forces of the Viet Cong, or National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam, and the North Vietnamese army. The initial Vietcong attacks stunned allied forces and took them by surprise, but most were quickly contained and beaten back. The exceptions were the fighting that erupted in the old imperial capital of Hu, where intense fighting lasted for a month, and the continuing struggle around the U.S.
  • My Lai Massacre

    The My Lai Massacre was the mass murder of 347 to 504 unarmed citizens in South Vietnam, entirely civilians conducted by U.S. Army forces on March 16, 1968. Many of the victims were sexually abused and some of the bodies were found mutilated. The US charged 14 officers for the involvment of the massacre.
  • Khe Sanh Attacked by Vietcong

    Over 1,300 artillery rounds hit the Marine base at Khe Sanh and its outposts, more than on any previous day of attacks. To withstand the constant assaults, bunkers at Khe Sanh are rebuilt to withstand 82mm mortar rounds. This is important because they got the militaRY SUPPLIES FROM SOUTH VIETNAM.
  • Rolling Thunder Ends

    After three-and-a-half years, Operation Rolling Thunder comes to an end. In total, the campaign had cost more than 900 American aircraft. Eight hundred and eighteen pilots are dead or missing, and hundreds are in captivity. Nearly 120 Vietnamese planes have been destroyed in air combat or accidents, or by friendly fire. Twenty thousand Chinese support personnel also have been casualties of the bombing. This is important because AMerica has now taken over some parts of N. Nam
  • Nixon Takes Office

    President Richard M. Nixon takes office as the new President of the United States. With regard to Vietnam. His aim was to negotiate a settlement that will allow the half million U.S. troops in Vietnam to be withdrawn witch will end the communisim of Nam.
  • Operation Menu

    President Nixon authorizes Operation Menu, the bombing of North Vietnamese and Vietcong bases within Cambodia. Over the following four years, U.S. forces had droped more than a half million tons of bombs on Cambodia which is important because this will make the N Vietnamese people to surrender.
  • Spraying Agent Orange Ends

    U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1968, spraying of Agent Orange continues in Vietnam until 1971. Operation Ranchhand has sprayed 11 million gallons of Agent Orange -- containing 240 pounds of the lethal chemical Dioxin -- on South Vietnam. They used up all of the agent orange to kill the nature itself.
  • 133,000 troops have come home

    133,000 U.S. servicemen stayed in South Vietnam for military renforcements in S. Nam. Two thirds of America's troops have gone in two years. The ground war is now almost exclusively the responsibility of South Vietnam. Now the troops needs strong weapons to win.

  • Nixon Resigns

    After the Watergate Scandal, Nixon resigns as president giving S. Nam. the strongest advocate to win the war.
  • Last Casuilties for US and Final Exacuation

    US Marine Embassy Guards McMahon and Judge were killed during in battle. The US servicemen also were killed and 41 servicemen wounded during the Mayaguez Incident in Democratic Kampuchea which ends the Vietnam War.
