  • Queen Elizabeth's Approval

    Queen Elizabeth's Approval
    Southern Colonies Queen Elizabeth gave permission to send a rather large goup of men to Roanoke Island. She gave permission because two of her explorers said it was perfect for a settlment. The large group of men were not very friendly to the people there. They arrived too late and couldn't do certain things in order to survive. After a year, they headed back to their homes.
  • Raleigh hired Simon Fernandez

    Raleigh hired Simon Fernandez
    Southern Colonies Raleigh was very angry when the people left the settlement that they had wanted. He decided to hire Simon Fernandez to help him transport many people for a more permanent settlement in Chesapeake Bay. John White was Fernandez's partner. John White was in charge and brought his family with him. Instead of settling in Chesapeake Bay as they intended, they settled in Roanake.
  • The Lost Colony

    The Lost Colony
    Southern Colonies John White left with Fernandez to get more supplies. When they arrived in England, they found England in war with Spain. They had to wait two years for England to defeat the Spanish. When John and Fernandez returned to Roanoke, something was strange. There was nobody there! Not even one person. "CROATOAN" was carved nearby. When John looked for his village a hurricane occurred and forced him to go back to England.

    Southern Colonies A big group of men landed on Virginia's James River. The river was swampy and was not healthy to drink. After they had landed, they were attacked by a tribe nearby. Even after they had been attacked they still wanted to stay. John Smith told the settlers to build shelters for protection. Sadly, harsh weather affected their settlement and then they had many hardships.

    Southern Colonies It was a very successful year in Jamestown. Jamestown, Virginia overcame hardships that happened in the past. For example, they established their first assembly called the House of Burgesses. Indentured servants and slaves started to arrive at this time. The Southern Colonies needed slaves to help boost their economy.
  • Pilgrims landed in Cape Cod

    Pilgrims landed in Cape Cod
    New England The pilgrims did not expect to land in Cape Cod. They had planned to settle much farther south, which is Jamestown, Virginia. A storm caused the ship to land in Cape Cod. When the pilgrims landed in Cape Cod, they traveled through Massachusetts Bay and found a rocky area called Plymouth Rock.

    The Mayflower was heading to the New World. There were high winds and storms that made the Mayflower rock back and forth. People had to find ways to protect themselves from the bad weather. They had to live on salted beef, dried biscuits and other dried vegetables until they were able to cook on the boat. It took more than two months to get from New England to the New World.

    New England In the center of town, Jamestown had a Meeting House. The Meeting House was for church services and meetings. Jamestown also had people sign the Mayflower Compact. The Mayflower Compact was made to keep order and develop laws for the colonies. It also showed loyalty to the King. The Mayflower Compact was the first constitution and it was the start of democracy in the New World.

    New England When the colony had plenty of food and and was no longer starving, they had their first Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a time where the colonist would pray and fast. The colonist prayed and and fasted because they were a religious colony. The colony also thanked Squanto for all of his help.

    Pennsylvania was Established
    King Charles gave a piece of land southwest of New Jersy to William Penn. He owed William's deseased father anyway. William thought to call the land "Sylvania" but later he wanted to call it "Pennsylvania." William guaranteed fair trials, and freedom of unjust imprisonments. He also guaranteed freedom of religion, and freedom of elections. This brought many nations to his land.
