Walter Raleigh comes to the New World
Two of Walter Raleigh's explorers found Roanoke Island to be the perfect place for settlement. Queen Elizabeth allowed Raleigh to send over 100 men to the island. They arrived too late, and they could not grow crops. They were also running low on supplies. They had to go back a year later. -

The Lost Colony
Simon Fernandez and John White left to go get more supplies in England. Upon arrival, they found a Spanish invasion! They got back two years later..... Everyone was gone! The name "Croatoan" was carved nearby, though. The Croatoan were a local Native American Tribe. Then a hurricane arose, causing him to have to go back to England. John White never got to go back and search for his family. He never saw them again. -
Jamestown is etablished
Jamestown was America's first permanent English colony. After they landed on the banks of James River they were attacked by Native Americans, but they stayed.They started running out of food and catching diseases. Only 60 men survived. Those 60 men went on, and established Jamestown. -
House of Burgesses is Established
The first elected assembly was established on July 30,1619. It was called the House Of Burgesses. It was formed so that they could establish a government. -
The Pilgrims Settle at Plymouth Rock
The Pilgrims landed at Cape Cod on the Mayflower. The only problem was that they didn't mean to. They actually wanted to land at Jamestown. After they landed, they started walking. They walked all the way across Massachusetts Bay to a rocky harbor. It was called Plymouth. They dicovered a gigantic rock.They named it Plymouth Rock. -
Puritans Arrive in the New World
The Puritans arrived in the New World in 1620.They had sailed the Mayflower over. They came to the New World for religious freedom. They wanted to get away from the Church of England and worship in their own way. -
Oceanus Hopkins Born
Oceanus Hopkins was born on the Mayflower. Since he was born on the ocean, his parents decided to name him Oceanus. There were more than 100 people on the Mayflower. Only 1 died. Then, Oceanus was born! -
Mayflower Compact is Signed
The Mayflower Compact was signed in 1620, by Oceanus Hopkin's parents. Forty-one other people signed it.
It was a way to show loyalty to the King. It kept order and developed laws in the colony. It was also the fist written constitution, and the beginning of democracy. -
First Thanksgiving
After the local Native Americans had tought the settlers to hunt and grow food, they celebrated. It was their first succesful harvest. William Bradford then held the first Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving was a term for praying. Not eating. They invited Squanto, Chief Massasoit, and 90 Wampanoags to celebrate with them. The celebration leasted three whole days! -
Pennsylvania Established
In 1681, King Charles ll gave land in the New World to William Penn. He owed his deceased father. He named it Pennsylvania. Penn was his last name and syilvania means "woods". He promised freedom. This brought many differents people over.
