    a group of 104 english men and boys founded jamestown on the banks of the james river. 500 people lived in the colony.
  • Antonio the negro

    Antonio the negro
    he was the first african to arrive in the colony. He was treated the same and had respect from the town. He later married the only other black women and had for children. They moved to Maryland.
  • Illegal to free a black slave

    Illegal to free a black slave
    they said it was illegal unless they were leaving the colony. The colony was becoming more and more dependant on slavery.
  • Cotton Gin

    Cotton Gin
    The cotton gin was invented by Eli whitney. It made the prcess of cotton a more efficient procces and increased the need for slaves.
  • Slave trade ban

    The congress bans the import of slaves to the U.S. But didn't become effective untill January 1, 1808.

    The liberator was started by William Lloyd Garrison. An abolition newspaper that lasted from 1831-1865
  • The Underground Railroad

    The Underground Railroad
    The underground railroad was lead by herriet tubman. She would help slaves find their way to freedom through a difficult path and risking being enslaved everytime to help other slaves. The south lost approximately 100,000 slaves in this time period.

    It declared that all runaway slaves be brought back to their masters. They would use hounds and any other measns to get them back.

    Dred Scott vs. Sandford
    His case was based on the fact that Dred Scott and his wife Harriet Scott were slaves, he had lived with his master Dr. John Emerson in states and territories where slavery was illegal. But the case didn't end in his favor resulting that slaves can't be citizens.

    It freed all of the union slaves. The rest became freed as the union took over confederate troops.

    It was the first all black regiment, controlled by mainly white captains.

    President Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth in Ford's Theater.

    The were unofficial laws put in place in the United States to limit the rights and civil liberties of blacks.
  • 14th amendment

    It stated that you couldn't descriminated against eachother based on race, color, or ethnic background. Everyone was a citizen as long as they were born in the U.S or worked for citizenship.

    These were introduced during reconstruction. It gave the idea of "seperate but equal". It gave African americans many disadvantages.
  • Plessy vs. Ferguson

    Plessy vs. Ferguson
    This decided that it was legal to be seperate, if it was equal.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    Brown vs. Board of Education
    This case overturned Plessy vs. Ferguson in the supreme court. It stated that all state sponsored segregation was illegal.
  • Rosa Parks

    Rosa Parks
    Rosa Paks refused to give up her seat towards the front of a local bus. When asked to move so that a white passanger could board she refused and was taken to jail. Her bold action started the Montgomery bus boycott.
  • 16th street Birmingham bombing

    16th street Birmingham bombing
    Four African girls were killed in the 16th street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. he church was used as a meeting-place for civil rights leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Fred Shuttlesworth. Klu Klux Klan was behind the bombing.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. assassination

    Martin Luther King Jr. assassination
    He was assassinated by James Earl Ray at the Lorraine motel. Martin Luther King Jr. was a very popular leader in the civil rights movement for Afrid=can Americans. He gave his famous "I have a dream" speech that influenced and inspired many people.
