    The life of Anthony Johnson & his sons

    Anthony Johnson went from owning land to having his family not recieve the land he owned when he died.
  • Doc. A 1645 Anthony Johnson purchases land in Northampton county.

    On July 10 of 1645, Anthony Johnson purchased some land in Northampton county.Anthony divided the land with Captain Taylor,the man he was buying land from. During this time, slaves weren't treated as poorly as they were later on in history. They could buy land, slaves, and indentured servants.
  • Doc. B 1654 Anthony Johnson doesn't want his slave taken away.

    On March 8, 1654 Anthony Johnson complains that he doesn't want his slave taken away. John Casar,Anthony's slave, said that he was supposed to work for 8 years as an indentured servant. Anthony said he didn't know of this information and that John Casar was to work for him for life. Anthony Johnson's family later persuaded him to let the slave go free.
  • Sept. 1667 The baptism of slaves does not exempt them from bondage.

    In September of 1667, there was a new law that said that the baptisme of slaves would not exempt them from bondage. In the Christian religion it says that you are not aloud to own other Christians as slaves. Many Africans weren't Christian so they were baptised so they could become Christians and not become slaves. When this law was passed, all slaves that weren't Christians would become slaves for life.
  • October 1669 An act discussing the casual killing of slaves.

    In October 1669, the lawmakers of Virginia made a new law saying that slave owners could casually kill slaves. This was to be a form of punishmant if a slave did something wrong. This was different from punishments in the past such as whipping or hitting. Most slave owners would kill their slaves to show to the others that their lives depended on how good they worked. Most slaves didn't know the English language so they ended up being killed because they couldn't understand what their

  • Oct.1705 A law saying that slaves are property

    In Octoberof 1705, there was a new law that said that slaves were considered property. This meant that slaves were going to be treated the same as anything their master owned. More slaves were going to be treated poorer than ever. Slaves now had literally no rights and were to be treated as property forever.
