The timeline for A.Johnson and his family

  • Anthony acquires land in Northampton County

Anthony Johnson was at first an indentured servant, but after his servatude he became the owner of a 250 acre farm, and not to mention that he had his own livestock, and two of his own black servants! It took Anthony 20 years to gain his freedom, and another 10 to gain the farm, livestock, and servants, but at least at this time Africans had an opportunity to carve out a niche for themselves!
  • Anthony returns to court over his servant and wins!1

Anthony was,as we already know,an indentured servant for at least 20 years. Anthony, as we already know, had 2 black servants. One of Anthony's servants was a man named John Casar. Anthony lost John to a white planter named Sam'll Goldsymth, but Anthony went back to court over his servant and ended up winning against Sam'll. This shows that the color of the persons' skin would not change the view of a person! Unfortunately, the political view of the African will change drastically as new laws

be slowly be chipped off like ice from a glacier .
  • ACT IV The Trap Is Set

ACT IV is a law saying"No Africans nor Indians are able to purchase christian servants."This law "set the trap" because it made the already hard life of a free Afican even harder. By not allowing the purchase of servants the African now has to do all the work with only the help of his family. This is exactly what the African had to do in his servatude! ACT IV as well as the other ACTS limited the opportunities of the African to only leave a choice of hard, laborous, work.
  • CHAP XXII The African Is Caught

CHAP XXII as you could guess from the title is the law that makes Africans officially estate. Before this law the African could still take the laborous, work option but CHAP XXII eliminated all other options except slavery and death. The reason these laws are the most important is that all these laws over time eliminated all options of the African and left the horrid slave life option.
  • CHAP IV The Trap Is Sprung

CHAP IV really was the spring of the trap it was the follow through of ACT IV. As we recall ACT IV made the African life harder by taking away their servants which made their already hard work harder thus making the choice of working for a living an unlikely choice leaving only two other choices.Servatude and holding an office. You obviously know their choice! Well CHAP IV eliminated the office choice leaving only slavery.
