Vietnamese soilders occupied the French base of Dien Bien Phu and there was a battle for 55 day with 3,000 French dead and 8,000 Vietnamese dead. But the Vietnamese won the battle and made the French lose intrest in the war.

North Korean army unit created a trail along the Vietnam and Cambodia border so that the North could get supplies to the Vietcong. The trail was Called the Ho Chi Minh trail and was important because the Vietcong helped the North attack the South in a descrete way at night so no one knew who they were.

President John F. Kennedy orders more help for the South Vietnamese govt. which included new epuiptment and 3,000 men to help fight the Vietcong.

Operation Ranchland was designed to clear vegation from the sides of the roads so Vietcong couldn't hide as easily for ambushes. U.S. soilders also sprayed "Agent Orange" a herbicide so that vegation would die so Vietcong bases would be exposed and and crops that would have helped feed the Vietcong were destroyed.

South Vietnamese cammandos attack two small North Vietnamese islands. The U.S. Destroyer Maddox was staiton 123 miles outside the Gulf of Tonkin and has a report of being fired apon even though later the captiain of the ship said there was not an attack on the ship in August of 1964.

After the attack on the U.S. Destroyer Maddox the U.S. congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resoultion which gave President Lydon B. Johnson power to take and action he thought was necessary to protect Southeast Asia.

President Johnson authorized Operation Rolling Thunder which was a long lasting bombing to try and stop the north from supporting the Vietcong.

The first bombs of Rolling Thunder are dropped and lasts till 1948.

U.S. offers North Vietnam Economic Aid offer for peace but the North deny the offer so LBJ ups U.S. strength by 60,000 men with troops from Australia and Korea to show international support.

Vietcong forces attacked U.S. Marine base Chi Lau and U.S. got a victory with Vietcong having 700 casualties to the U.S. 200 casulties.

200 Helicopters swept Tay Ninh starting off the operation that lasted for 72 days by 30,000 US soilders and 5,000 South Vietnamese soilders and the captured stores and bases and weapons from the north but no major battle waged

At 4:03 am a rocket killed two us soilders in Saigon being the last two americans to die. At dawn all us forces leave emassy and two hours later North tanks roll through the enbassy offically ending the war.
