Diminising Progress

  • Africans cannot have guns (Act 10)

This act makes Africans defenseless against an attack. This means if a war is upon them they will surly die because they have no guns. This also means that Africans cannot hunt. Back then you couldn't hunt without a gun. This shows you that discrimination has started.
  • Anthony Johnson won against a white man in court. (Document C)

Anthony Johnson returns to court and wins against Robert Parker therefore getting his slave, John Casar, back. At the end of the trial Robert Parker must make payment of all charge in the suit… This tells you that at this time period any African can go to court and win against a white man. But, this won’t last for long.
  • It is legal to casually kill slaves. (Act 1)

This act is about the killing of slaves. The killing of slaves is morally wrong, cruel, and inhuman. Think of it this way a slave is a human being, just like you, and if you kill a human being (in this case a slave) you are killing your own kind which is inhuman and morally wrong. This shows you that plantation owners are making more and more morally wrong chooses.
  • If a slave runs away it is legal to wound or kill them. (Act 8)

If a slave runs away and is captured, then his/her owner can wound or kill them. Referring to act 1 killing a slave is legal. So if you kill a slave it is legal? Yes and no. Yes because it is legal according to act 1. No because it is morally wrong, cruel, and inhumane.
  • Enslaved children are tythable at a certain age. (Act 7)

Since Act 1 says that "slaves can be killed as a punishment" those children can be killed. Now that children can work that means that not only can slaves work they are on their way to becoming real estate.
  • Africans, Mulatto, and Indian slaves are to be real estate. (Act 22)

All slaves it doesn't matter what race are to be real estate. This is correct, but is unfair. This is unfair because a slave is a human being and should not be treated like property. They should be treated like a human being, with love, nurture, and peace.
