Rise to Fame

A Change for Renoir
Renoir began to grow dissatisfied with the formal restrictions of pure impressionism during his trip to Algiers and Italy. Because of his lack of satisfaction he started to change his way of painting. He began to make his figures larger and placing them closer to the pictureplane. This form of painting led to his "harsh manner" of the mid-1880's. -
Pneumonia
Renoir meets Richard Wagner at his home in Palermo, Sicily, and paints his portrait in only 35 minutes. He then returns to Algeria for six weeks to treat his pneumonia, which will cause permament damage to his respiratory system. -

The 1900's were the beginnning of the Impressionist Art Movement. This included many painters such as Claude Monet and Auguste Renoir. The most common characteristics of impressionist paintings were small, thin brush strokes, uncommon visual angles, and the inclusion of movement. -

Pierre-Auguste purchases the estate of Les Collettes at Cagnes on the Mediterranean near Nice. -

Renoir visits the Louvre one last time to see his paintings hanging with the old masters. He dies in Cagnes-sur-Mer. -
