  • Annexation of Hawaii

    Annexation of Hawaii
    Ships began arriving in Hawaii bringing missionaries, settlers, and traders. Also, bringing diseases reducing Hawaiian population.
  • McKinley Tariff

    In 1890, the Congress enacted the McKinley Tariff. This created a crisis by ending Hawaii's favored position in the Sugar Trade permitting all countries to ship sugar duty-free to the U.S.
  • Annexation of the Philippines

    Former U.S. minister of China warned opponents of annexation that times had changed. Supporters believed that the U.S. would bring democracy to the Philippines. Opponenets of annexation said that by denying their independence the U.S. would violate it's own ideals expressed in the Declaration of Independence.
  • Spanish American War

    Spanish American War
    The wars first battle was fought in a Spanish held Philippine Islands. Dewey's fleet steamed acrossed Manila Bay. The Spanish sighted the Americans and opened fire, but ships were out of range.The ships slowy moved closer to show and then the war began.
  • Teller Amendment

    Once Cuba won it's independence from Spain, the United States would leave the government in control of the island to it's people.
  • The Boxer Rebellion

    The Boxer Rebellion
    The Boxer's attacked Western Missionaries and traders in northern China. More than 200 people were killed. Chinese government officials supported the uprising. Foreign countries resonded by sending troops to China.

    U.S. and the Panama Canal

    John Hay negotiated with the Republic of Colombia, which included Panama. The treaty was drafted in 1903. In return, 99 year lease on a 60 mile strip of land. U.S. agreed to pay $10 million and a year rental of $250 thousand. Working on the canal began in 1904.
  • Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty

    Gave the U.S. complete and unending sovereignty over 10 mile wide canal's zone. The U.S. recognized the Republic of Panama and Hay began negotiating a new Canal's treaty with Bunau-Varilla.
  • Roosevelt Corollary

    Roosevelt made it clear that he intended to enforce the Monroe Doctrine. The Dominican Republic cannot repay the European lenders. Fearing that Europeans would forcefully collect the loans. He issued the Roosevelt Corollary.
  • The Great White Fleet

    The Great White Fleet
    Consisted of sixteen new battleships of the Atlantic Fleet. The fourteen-month long voyage was a grand pageant of American sea power. The squadrons were manned by 14,000 sailors. They covered some 43,000 miles and made twenty port calls on six continents.
  • Dollar Diplomacy

    Dollar Diplomacy
    Taft suggested replacing European loans with American ones. Increasing U.S. ecnonmical power would reduce the changes of European interventions. Latin America had invested 1.6 billion dollars in mines, railroads, and sugar plantations.
