10/12 TimeToast Civil War Timeline

  • Northwest Ordinance

    All of the new states entered the union on an equal foot with the same power, same rights, and responsibilities as the original states. Once the new states were allowed in the union then democracy was spread to those new territories by rewarding them on equal footing into the union. Slavery was also prohibited in the Northwest Ordinance territories. This is important to history because it made it where the west would be set for good.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    The 1st land acquisition following the territory acquired from the Treaty of Paris was the Louisiana Purchase. Mr. Jefferson signed a treaty with France buying the territory from Napoleon. He also sent Lewis and Clark to explore the land. This is important to history because the Louisiana Purchase strengthened the country.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    The Monroe Doctrine was used as a basis for the future president's involvement. Rulers of the Monroe Doctrine was depending on the British navy. The Monroe Doctrine caused problems between the US, Latin/South America. This is important to history because the Monroe Doctrine is known for being a great policy for the Western Hemisphere.
  • Nullification Crisis

    The issue of states rights continued to be alive. States had the right to declare a federal law (or tax) hull and void if it harms the state. Once the federal government passed a high protective tariff the south became very mad. This is important to history because the Nullification Crisis was overlooked by many.
  • Texas Annexation

    Mexico refused to represent texas independence. Texas could not be admitted as a new state because of border disputes. They (Texas) waited 10 years just to be admitted to the union due to the amount of power issue. This is important to history because money from the US would help pay off the debt and Texas would be able to get protection from the U.S. Army.
  • Mexican Cession

    The Mexican Cession contained territories that made up most of the rest of the Southwestern US. The US acquired that by the treaty that ended the Mexican-American War. Completed Manifest Destiny by giving Americans control of land from the Atlantic. This is important to history because it was what the Americans gained after the Mexican American war.
  • Oregon Treaty

    Jointly occupied and claimed by the Americans, British, and Spanish. Negotiations led to the Oregon territory of 1846 allowing the US to control South of the 49th parallel. Lewis and Clark found the Oregon territory. This is important to history because the Oregon treaty was valuable to the U.S. and Britain.
  • Missouri Compromise of 1850

    California admitted as a free state, banned the slave trade in D.C, popular sovereignty to decide slavery, stronger fugitive slave law. Not many were happy with all of the parts of the Compromise of 1850. Replaced the Missouri Compromise. This is important to history because it left most of the problems with the Missouri Compromise.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Stephan Douglass proposes popular sovereignty whether Kansas and Nebraska would be slave or free states. Both sides sent supporters to sway the votes. The Kansas-Nebraska Act overturned the Missouri Compromise by allowing popular sovereignty north of the 36/30. This is important to history because it allowed people in the territories to decide if they want to allow slavery within their borders.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Forces turned conflict violent. Both pro and anti-slavery supporters attempted to swap the votes, leading to violence and deaths. Determining if Kansas was going to be a slave state or not led to Bleeding Kansas. This is important to history because violence was caused by people sneaking into Kansas to vote for slavery.
  • Battle of Fort Sumter

    When Confederate forces fired on the union it held garrison. Garrison commander surrendered April 13th and was put out the next day. The course and outcome of the civil war depended upon the economic resources of the Noth and South. This is important to history because it was a special war.
  • Battle of Bull Run

    Lincoln replaced McDowell with General George G. McClellan in hopes he would lead the union to victory. Confederate victory showed war was going o be longer and more deadly than thought. It was also the 1st battle. This is important to history because it marked the 1st big land battle of the Civil War.
  • Battle of Antietam

    it was a tactical draw. On the single bloodiest day of the war, 23,000 soldiers lay dead or wounded. The 1st southern invasion into North. Turned into the motivation of the war from preserving the union to abolishing slavery. This is important to history because this battle allowed Abraham to issue the EP (Emancipation Proclamation.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Lincoln was promoted as a "military measure". Did not free slaves in the regions under confederate control or in the border states. Only states in rebellion on January 1, 1863, would be commanded to free their slaves. This is important to history because it led to the abolition of slavery in the United States.

    Presidential Reconstruction

    The goal was to preserve the union. Lenient to the South. Quick and easy to reconnect the southern states to the union. This is important to history because 10% of 1860 voters swore an oath to the union.
  • Battle of Vicksburg

    UNION VICTORY!! Splits Confederacy in, union control of Mississippi River. Grant lays siege against Vicksburg after multiple attempts to capture the city. This is important to history because the union had control of Mississippi.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    UNION VICTORY!!! Last attempt of the South to invade the North Bloodiest battle. Occurred in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. This is important to history because it was the turning point of the war.
  • GettysBurg Address

    Lincoln visits the Gettysburg battlefield to dedicate a cemetery for the fallen soldiers. He described it as a struggle to fulfill. Occurred in November of 1863. This is important to history because Lincoln wanted to make the country better,
  • 13th Amendent

    Ended Slavery!!! Southern states had to recognize 13th Adenmenet before they could form a government. Black codes demonstrated southern not willing to recognize the rights of freedmen.

    Congressional Reconstruction

    Punished the South. This was an addition to the Presidential plan. And it also allowed African Americans to vote. This is important to history because it gave African Americans equal protection.
  • 14th Amendment

    Granted all men birthright citizenship, Rights of all citizens to equal protection under the law, and due process of law. Overturned Dred Scott. This is important to history because it gave all citizens equal protection.
  • 15th Amendent

    Allows all men to vote. Motivated by a desire to ensure the right to vote and be the desire of the Republican party to establish its political power in the South. But only men could vote no matter the color of their skin. This is important to history because it allowed all men to vote.
  • Plessy V. Ferguson

    Sperate but equal! Supreme Court upheld segregation and discrimination. Negated equal protection provisions of the 14th amendment and brought more Jim Crow laws. This is important to history because of "separate but equal".
