YOACAP Timeline

  • Creation

    Creation
    Youth Outreach Adolescent Community AIDS Program (YOACAP) is initiated as a program of the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition (GPUAC). YOACAP's first source of funding is a $50,000 award from the Philadelphia Department of Public Health/AIDS Activities Coordinating Office (AACO). YOACAP develops community outreach strategies and culturally tailored HIV education activities that are provided by African American youth peer educators iat various locations.

    Technical assistance is provided to YOACAP by a program called "A Grassroots Response To AIDS". This also kicks off the collaboration between Womean's Outreach Initiative, GALAEI Project, Unity Inc., and YOACAP
  • Partnership

    Partnership
    YOACAP partners with the Baltimore Care Connection, with a focus of exploring the use of hip-hop music and drama as HIV prevention strategies aimed at African American youth. After collaborating on the play, it is premiered at Hahneman University Hospital. The play is well-received, at which point plays become a valid way of effecting the youth.

    YOACAP performs "A Time For Life" which is a play that symbolizes key aspects of life. It is done for various other community groups such as Point Breeze Performing Arts, Ridgeway Community Center, etc..
  • CAAP Partnership

    CAAP Partnership
    YOACAP partners with the Celebrity AIDS Awarness Project (CAAP). CAAP was created in 1991 to provide youth acorss the country with information about STDs. CAAP and YOACAP go on a tour throughout the Midwest performing "Wake Up the World" to educational institutes.
  • Rock the Vote

    Rock the Vote
    YOACAP works with Rock the Vote to promote voter education among young people through efforts to register, educate, and mobilize youth in the Delaware Valley for the upcoming Presidential elections.
  • Rap premiere

    Rap premiere
    YOACAP premieres "Represent II" a rap musical at the Painted Bridge Art Center located at 230 Vine street. The play involved characters from "Represent I" and showed the impact of the actions of various characters. The turnout included over 250 students from middle and high school primarily.
  • Restructuring

    Restructuring
    YOACAP restructures the organization. The agency is now composed of four units. The restructing reflects the agency's growth and diversification of services based on community needs. These four units are: Reproductive Health Services, Program Developments and Evaluation, Youth and Family Preservation Projects, and Media Health Promotions.
  • Promotions

    Promotions
    Linda Burnette, who has served as YOACAP's Executive Director for 15 years is named the agency's President and CEO. Duerward Beale is named the new Executive Director.
  • Gun Campaign

    The Southwest Community Advisory, 12th District Police, YOACAP, and Power 99 FM collaborated to complete a Turn in the Gun Campaign at the Kingsessing Recreation where local and State officials attended and were interviewed by a Power 99 Radio Station Personalities.
