Jonh Parr had lied about his age and joined the military at the small age of 14.

Parr became an infantry scout with the 4th Middlesex. They were scouts to a marching army and they were to ride ahead of the marching army and come back to tell whats lies ahead.

On the outbreak of the First World War in early August 1914 the 4th Middlesex was mobilized and was among the first British Army units of the British Expeditionary Force to cross the English Channel to France.

The assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand sparked a chain of events that lead to the beginning of ww1. He was assassinated because of a member of a Serbian nationalist terrorist group fighting against Austria-Hungary's rule over Bosnia. After Francis Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated Austria-Hungary was furious and, with Germany’s support, declared war on Serbia on July 28. Some people say that this was one of the many reasons that WW1 was started and I agree with them.

Germany invades Luxembourg and Belgium. France invades Alsace. British forces arrive in France. Nations allied against Germany were eventually to include Great Britain, Russia, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Rhodesia, Romania, Greece, France, Belgium, United States, Canada, Serbia, India, Portugal, Montenegro, and Poland. This was the layout of the soon to be war.

On 21 August 1914, Parr and another cyclist were sent to the village of Obourg, just northeast of Mons, and slightly over the border in Belgium, with orders to locate where the Germans were. It is believed that whilst doing this they encountered an Uhlan patrol from the German First Army engaged in the same work and that Parr remained to hold off the enemy whilst his companion returned to report. He was killed in an exchange of rifle fire.

This blockade lasted from 1914 to 1919. This naval blockade was produced by the allied powers, especially Great Britain. The allied powers did this during and after the war to restrict the supply of goods to the Central Powers. which included Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey.

The United States joined the war because of Germany. The U.S. entered World War I because Germany embarked on a deadly gamble. Germany sank many American merchant ships around the British Isles which prompted the American entry into the war. Then America declares war on Germany.

In the first sustained American offensive of World War I, an Allied force including a full brigade of nearly 4,000 United States soldiers captures the village of Cantigny, on the Somme River in France, from their German enemy.

On July 2, 1921, U.S. President Warren G. Harding signed the Knox–Porter Resolution in Berlin, which had been passed by the U.S. Congress ended the state of war between the U.S. and Germany, Austria and Hungary, further setting the stage for bilateral peace treaties. This ended the war and peace was throughout the world until ww2.

On the 100th anniversary of Parr's death, a memorial paving stone was laid in the pavement outside his home at 52 Lodge Lane.
