Dwight Eisenhower was in charge of planning Operation Overlord and this operation took a long time to prepare.     The first concentration camp was liberated by the Soviets, the first camp they liberated was the Majdanek camp in Poland. And later during the year liberated more camps. On July 27, 1945 they liberated Auschwitz the largest of the concentration camps.     Battle of Iwo Jima
    The Battle of Iwo Jima was a primary location for a U.S. airbase in distance to strike Japan. The Island was heavily defended and took many months of fighting for the U.S. to take control of Iwo Jima.   • Hiroshima and Nagasaki

    Hiroshima and Nagasaki
    With the first dropping of the atomic bomb over Hiroshima the blast wiped out 90 percent of the city and killed 80,000 people. Then with the second dropping of the atomic bomb over Nagasaki killed an estimated of 40,000 people.
