    Blitzkrieg was a strategy of war which was used to end the war quickly. It was known as lightening war. Germany sent 1.5 million troops into Poland. The Polish Army was defeated within weeks of Germany's attack.

    The Miracle of Dunkirk was the evacuation of allied soldiers from the harbor of Dunkirk, France. These soldier were brought out by small boats and fishing boats because of the British blockade. At the end of 8 days over 300,000 soldiers had been evacuated.

    The Battle of Britain was a military campaign when the Royal Air Force defended the United Kingdom. This was a major campaign fought entirely by aired forces. The bombing of London was Germany using the Blitzkrieg strategy. Germany was trying to put an end to the war quickly.

    Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union
    On June 22 1941 Adolf Hitler launched an assault on the Soviet Union. He launched 3 great armies with over 3 million soldiers. Germany had underestimated there opponents as they struggled to push through Russia. Germany was not prepared for the Russian weather and ended up having to retreat. Nazi Germany now faced a 2 front war that they could not win. Known as the Barbarossa plan had failed.

    On December 7th, 1941 hundreds of Japan fighter pilots bombed America's Pearl Harbor. More than 2,000 Americans were killed in the attack and another 1,000 were injured. The Japanese destroyed over 20 naval vessels included 8 enormous battle ships and they destroyed over 300 air planes.

    The Battle of Bataan
    Filipino and American troops were forced off islands and were back into the Bataan peninsula. With the troops running out of supplies and beginning to starve U.S. General Edward King Jr. was forced to surrender. The Japanese took the soldiers prisoners and the prisoners were forced to take the Bataan Death March which was a 65 mile walk back to prison camps. Many soldiers died on the walk and those who lived were treated very poorly by the Japanese guards.

    Two months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor president Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order that made all Japanese-Americans relocate to the west coast. About 120,000 people were relocated to 10 internment camps spread out by the west coast. Most of these to be relocated were U.S. citizens. The last camp closed in 1946. In 1988 those who survived were awarded payment for the act.

    Midway and Iwo Jima were both Islands owned by Japan in which the United States stormed the islands and took control of both islands. Iwo Jima was roughly defended by 23,000 Japanese. About 6,000 American died in the Iwo Jima battle leaving even more injured. At Midway America sank 4 carrier fleets and destroyed over 300 planes.
