Kaiser Wilhelm II assured Austria of Germany's support for Austria against Serbia ("Blank Cheque") Also a start to WWI since as each country alliances became involved, then the alliance's alliances became involved, leading to the war growing to encompass the entire world. When Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia and Germany also fought by invading Belgium on August 4th. Which leads to USA declaring war on Germany and being alliances with France.

German commander, Erich Ludendorff hoped that it would strike a decisive blow to the Allies (Britain, France, Russia, Italy and USA) and convince them to negotiate for peace before new troops from USA come. Worked since they gained a lot of territory and this was their desperate attempt to win.

Germany got the most punishment since they were the third man in the war. If they did not join, it would've been only a war between Austria-Hungary and Serbia. 1. Germany had to pay for all the damages even if it wasn't their fault. 2. Only have 100,000 people in their military, which made it hard to defend themselves. 3.Lost a lot of land. These events lead to a poor economy in Germany and lead to chaos.
